The harrowing true story of a teenage boy who decided joining the Soviet Army during the Great Patriotic War was better than being a slave worker in a Soviet coal mine. This is the story of his experiences during that war, what his family endured, and his survival up to the present day. From the Prologue: At noon on June 27, 1941, Father declared decisively “Liuba, we have to run immediately!” Mother hesitated, but Father insisted and was not about to give in. With his violin in one hand and a small bag in the other, he led Jaka and me to the doorway. Mother still held back. She was very reluctant to leave our home. Father kept pleading. “Liuba, I know the Germans well and what they’re capable of doing. They’ll bring death.” Finally, Mother relented. The four of us ran toward Riga’s central railroad station. When we finally reached the station, the train was already filled with others trying to flee. With great effort, we found a crowded compartment and managed to wedge ourselves in. We sat for over an hour waiting for the train to depart. Mother was extremely anxious and finally could sit no longer. “I need to check once more,” she said. “I want to be sure everything is locked.” I moved swiftly to the door to bar her way, I was strong enough to prevent her from leaving. But, in her soft manner, Mother begged me to let her go. “I’ll be back in ten minutes.” Sitting next to me, my Father appealed, “Let her go. She will be back.” With that, I unwillingly gave in and Mother left the train. We could only sit and wait anxiously for her to return. A few minutes after Mother left, Latvian Fifth Column Diversionist snipers zeroed in on our train as I was standing outside the car. I was trying to see if I could spot Mother. A Russian soldier fired back as the bullets whistled around him. He protected himself by hiding behind one of the car wheels. I hid behind another. Then a second soldier ran past us and I heard a terrible explosion. The soldier was blown to pieces by a hand grenade. Almost immediately, the train began to move. Shaken and gasping for air, I quickly jumped aboard, as the train’s speed began to increase. After traveling almost three kilometers, the train stopped again for about two hours, and then it rolled on eastwards toward the Russian Inland. An hour later, the railroad behind us was completely cut off by the Spearhead of the SS Dead Skull Division. Our train was the only one to leave Riga. Although our Mother told us she wanted to check the house one more time, her real intention was to try and convince her brother to join us. She did not succeed and in the process failed to return before the train left. That was the last time we ever saw our Mother. I should not have let her leave, despite my Father’s assurances. Gripping and heart wrenching

This was a gripping and heart wrenching account of one mans experience through World War II and the holocaust. The trials this man, his family, and his people went through seems more then anyone could bear, yet he never gave up. This is such an important piece of history.

Very interesting story, felt it was worthwhile reading. However poorly written by the author and needed a good writer to make it in to a really good book.

A Must Read!

Jeremy Bates’ World’s Scariest Places series is always a pre-order for me. I’ve read enough of his books now to know what I’m in for: a fast paced and scary read set in a real (and creepy) location.

Island of the Dolls was no exception. As usual, Bates gives us a character we care about and plunks them down in the middle of an eerie and dangerous situation. The setting itself was stellar. Isla de las Munecas is a real place and is on my travel list, but I think I just may leave this book at home when I finally get there.

The mystery itself is well done. Bates does a great job of mixing past real life horrors with today’s superstition. It was very creepy and it took me longer than it should have to figure out the reason behind our murderous mystery.

If I didn’t have to go to work, this would have been a one-sitting read. As it was, I read this late into the night last night, completely unwilling to stop until I had finished it.

I can’t wait for whatever scares Bates throws us in his next book!

Book characters are all the same

I've read three of his books & the characters are the same: the protagonist is a very tall, fit male with a tendency for fisticuffs with another male character who is the story's a-hole. Foreign female hottie who had a thing for the very tall male. Very tall male's girlfriend is a total jerk or acts like one to get back at VTM. However, the books have a good, "explainable" twist for each scariest place location. My advice to the author: Come up with new characters.

Great fun

I always really enjoy Mr. Bates books and this is no exception. Combine a scary place and building tension along with being stranded and watch the characters show their true selves. A great read with a satisfying ending.

About the Author
Mark F. Sanders has been a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis for 27 years. In that time, he has taught more than 120 genetics courses to more than 30,000 undergraduate students. Specializing in teaching the genetics course for which this book is written, Dr. Sanders also teaches a genetics laboratory course, an advanced human genetics course for biology majors, and a human heredity course for non-science majors.  His teaching experience also includes introductory biology, and courses in population genetics and evolution. 

 

Dr. Sanders received his Bachelors degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Following graduation, he spent four years at the University of California, Berkeley as a post-doctoral researcher studying inherited susceptibility to human breast and ovarian cancer. At UC Berkeley he also taught his first genetics courses. Since coming to the University of California, Davis, Dr. Sanders has maintained a full-time teaching schedule and promotes academic achievement by undergraduate students in numerous ways, including as an active student advisor, through his on-going role as the director of a long-standing undergraduate student program, and by past service as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs in the College of Biological Sciences.

 

John L. Bowman is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of California, Davis in the US. He received a B.S. in Biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.  His Ph.D. research focused on how the identities floral organs are specified in Arabidopsis (described in Chapter 20).  He conducted postdoctoral research at Monash University on the regulation of floral development.  From 1996-2006 his laboratory at UC Davis focused on the developmental genetics of plant development, focusing on how leaves are patterned. From 2006-2011 he was a Federation Fellow at Monash University where his laboratory is studying land plant evolution using a developmental genetics approach.  At UC Davis he taught genetics, 'from Mendel to cancer', to undergraduate students, and continues to teach genetics courses at Monash University.

Welcome to your nightmare

Someone commented that this is a gem for graduate level study--maybe it is. However, for an undergraduate survey course in genetics, this book is a mess that will leave you frustrated and perplexed without feeling like you've actually learned anything. Our professor made a deal with us: most of the exams will come from the back of chapter problems. Fair enough, I thought. However, I soon began to realize that the problems AND answers were so wordy and disorganized that what should have been a boon was just confusing me even more and leaving me directionless before an exam. Part of the problem is that this text is too detailed. Another huge problem is that the solutions manual is riddled with wrong answers. After the semester was already halfway over, our professor provided us with the errata for the solutions manual and it was disorganized and incomplete as well. For a class that could have been illuminating and genuinely great, this book single-handedly made it its mission to keep the class average below 50. What a piece of garbage. Correct and edit, please.

This book is utter garbage. I can't get through a chapter without having to check the internet for corrections and mistakes that are littered throughout this book. Not to mention the lack of proof reading in the end of chapter questions. This book made Genetics hell for me, and I despise that it was a required text. Maybe the editors should fix the problems instead of making new editions of this trash.

Avoid at all costs

This is a terribly written textbook. It reads like an instruction manual, and takes two pages to get the idea or concept. My professor was repeatedly frustrated with the structure and formatting. I'm just baffled by how awful this book is!

Reiteration of the same old stuff

Published in 1971 at the peak of the "ancient astronaut" craze. It seems the author did little of his own research-- he just borrowed stuff from many different sources and slapped it all together. Nonetheless, most of it is quite fascinating, if it's true that is. The problem, however, is that there's no index or bibliography, which makes it nearly impossible to check his sources or refer back to anything in his book-- which really bugs me, hence 3 stars. Also, the author could've put less pointless garbage in his book: for example, whenever he begins a chapter he starts off with excerpts from non-related science fiction stories. This book could've been better. As an alternative I recommend Erich von Daniken, at least Mr. Daniken gets to the point.

Presented in full color, the text describes various concepts, principles, and theories that are supported by scientific research, factual evidence, and experience of the authors in dealing with various conditions.

The chapters in this text are divided into six parts:
Part I––Foundations of Therapeutic Modalities begins with a chapter that discusses the scientific basis for using therapeutic modalities and classifies the modalities according to the type of energy each uses.. Guidelines for selecting the most appropriate modalities for use in different phases of the healing process are presented.
Part II––Electrical Energy Modalities includes detailed discussions of the principles of electricity, and electrical stimulating currents, iontophoresis, and biofeedback.
Part III––Thermal Energy Modalities discusses those modalities which produce a change in tissue temperatures through conduction including thermotherapy and cryotherapy.

Bill Prentice, PhD, PT, ATC has been Coordinator of the Athletic Training specialization at the University of North Carolina since 1980 and is a Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. Dr. Prentice is recognized as an author, educator, and clinician. He served for ten years as the Director of Sports Medicine Education for the Healthsouth Corporation, and is the author of nine textbooks and more than 75 journal articles. He has received numerous awards, and was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers Association's Hall of Fame in 2004.

Disappointed

The content of the book itself is fine, however I regret buying the ebook version. It is very difficult to navigate, the text sizing does not fit with case study text boxes that exist throughout the book, and keyword searching within the book is not supported.

I have borrowed friends' paper versions of the text, and found it much preferable in ease of navigation. Again, the content itself of the book is fine, but the ebook format is very disappointing.

Poor entry in a crowded field

Having seen most of the books in this field of practice this one seems outclassed by many others. Some chapters such as electrical stimulation are especially weak. While referenced reasonably well, there are lots of places that an explanation of what the reference says that would be useful. This book does not focus on evidence based practice as well as others and there are lots of unsubstantiated claims in it.

Badly written, edited even worse.

I started keeping track of all the typos and badly written paragraphs but I got too fatigued and lost count. The absolute worst book I have ever read in my Physical Therapy studies. It wouldn't bee too bad if it were just the bad editing or typos but adding mis-information and flat-out wrong information makes this book dangerous. Don't use this to learn how to use modalities.
