They called us bullies and they called us torturers, but we did what we did because we thought it was necessary. Hazing 101 vividly reveals how fraternities haze, why they do it, and why they discriminate against the weak and unattractive. No other book out there has ever exposed so clearly what it feels like to suffer through the trials and tribulations of pledging a college fraternity. Darren Bryce tells it all: Rush Week, blackball votes, Hell Week, call-ins, line-ups, secret meetings, and the cruelest of hazing techniques.

Astonishing and Revealing
By T. Steinbrenner
Let me begin by stating firmly that I am against hazing in all shapes and forms. Nevertheless, I am still giving this book high marks because it is exactly what I was looking for, true stories about hazing told from the viewpoint of real students. There is no trite or dry analysis from experts, just the conversations, thoughts, and actions of young men who are performing the actual hazing techniques or being subjected to them. Darren Bryce does a magnificent job revealing the emotions, opinions, and motivations of these brothers and pledges and he exposes many hazing secrets about Greek Life at FSU.
I thought the chapters revolving around the blackballing of a pledge were very well done. They give you a clear understanding as to why guys like Bryce feel hazing and discrimination is both acceptable and necessary. Something I learned from this book is that hazing is a tool to get rid of "weak links" more than a pastime enjoyment for bullies. This does not in any way excuse the behavior of Bryce and his friends, but it does force parents and teachers to look beyond the actions of groups and individuals and assign more blame to the competitive structure of Greek systems and sport leagues.
Greek organizations and sports teams exist in a spirited atmosphere of rivalry and struggle where the pursuit of rank and status is a zero-sum competition. That is to say, winning requires others to lose, and the greater they lose, the more you win. Consequently, the members of Greek organizations and sport teams are willing to haze and discriminate against their fellow members in order to build the most competitive organization they can. To make matters worse, competition empowers the better Greek organizations and sports teams with status claims and bragging rights to harass and discriminate against other organizations. The members of these lower tier organizations, in turn, become further motivated to haze and discriminate against their weak links so that they can elevate their competitive status and ascertain the rank necessary to avoid this external threat of harassment, discrimination, and loser's shame. In this light, intra-group acts of hazing and discrimination are actually defensive mechanisms rather than irrational acts based on cruelty and sadism. This does not excuse the harmful behavior of these organizations in any way, but it gives us a context for understanding the underlying forces that make hazing and discrimination more likely.
Something else I discovered is that many students are fully aware of the structural forces that are causing them to act the way they do--and many students don't like them. This was very encouraging to learn because students who feel this way are more likely to be influenced by anti-hazing campaigns. Chapter 12 has a great dialogue between fraternity brothers about how these competitive pressures are a part of their everyday lives and they have no choice but to accept them and act accordingly. As teachers and parents, it is our job to show students that these pressures do not have to result in hazing or discrimination because there are many other ways to win competition. The competitive structure itself may be immutable to change, but how organizations react to this structure is something we can influence.
I think every student should read Hazing 101 to understand what hazing is, why it is done, and why it is so harmful. Bryce offers little by way of solutions, but his book highlights the problem in a unique and personal way that has never been done before to this degree. If we don't understand the true motivations of hazing, then we will never be able to defeat it. This may have not been the author's true purpose in writing about his experiences as a fraternity brother, but he has accomplished this worthy goal willingly or not.

Hazing Stories from Fratire Series
By Thomas King
Argghhh. I'm a huge fan of the Fratire series, so I jumped at buying the new book. Unfortunately, I did not read the description carefully enough to realize that this was just a collection of all the hazing chapters from Bryce's first four books. On the positive side, it does look like some of the chapters have been tweaked and revised. Also, there was one new chapter (F_ing Alumni) that I guess was added to the first book after I read it. It's written like the chapter in book 4 from the perspective of a nameless pledge. Very cool. If you haven't read the Fratire series and want to read real stories about hazing at FSU, then this is a smart buy.

Interesting read
By Tamara L. Hurlburt
I bought this book to continue to explore reasons behind hazing and how to reach college students to stop hazing. While the book is not academic, it did provide a very interesting perspective of hazing and the thought process behind hazing activities.
