I want to read more books by Mr. Levine !!!

Anyone who enjoyed the breadth and depth of Mr. Levine's book on Frank Lloyd Wright will find this book even more inspiring... and ... breathtaking. Uh,,, what a book. Rarely does one find nowadays a book that persuasively weaves both experiential-constructs and intellectual-constructs of modern architecture. Reading Mr. Levine's book, one feels like as if he is holding the reader's hand (very sensitive and delicate in shaping of the text), guiding the architectural tour, at the same time, telling the stories of the era, the architect, the building, the thinker, and the spirit of age. Similar to his earlier publication, it's almost impossible to cover sweet little stories and diligent scholarship of minute details in this book.

There are plenty of good books on Modern Architecture. Books by Siegfried Giedion, Colin Rowe, Kenneth Frampton, William Curtis, just to name a few. However, mission of this book is somewhat different. Other books on modern architecture (prior to postmodernism) were more or less Euro-centric, covering only "Chicago School", "NY Architecture", and some architects. The U.S. architecture was covered peripheral. Mr. Levine's book, though the majority of contents are still predominantly Europe, seeks American role in shaping of the Modern Architecture. He redirects the developmental axis of modern architecture to the U.S. This is particularly clear in his outlining of the chapters and the selection of architects in the chapters. First half of the chapters are the heroic architects in Europe, and second half of the chapters are the American architects. He does not mention extensively on the role of Otto Wagner, Victor Horta, Henry Van De Velde, Herman Muthesius, Le Corbusier, Alvar Aalto, etc.

Mr. Levine's selection of architects and their built projects are lined side by side with the best corresponding theoreticians of the era in the first half of the book. The book plays with (the subtitle of this book) the two words, "Representation" and "Reality." Idealistic representational in the classical order and its counterpart realistic constructional in the emerging realistic expressions are in sharp contrast. Though, Mr. Levine balances well between the two (in other words, aesthetic idealism and historical relativism), I was leaning towards the "Reality" side of architects. Explanations on Souflot's Pantheon, Labrouste's Library, Theories of Pugin & Le Duc, Sullivan's Wainwright, and Wright's Taliesin, etc were particularly awesome read. Mr. Levine's book is a deep rational synthesis of serious analysis, but it read delightfully easy. In each architectural "wonder", he also sculpts his texts poetically.

In Mr. Levine's earlier book on Frank Lloyd Wright, I found 'reading' Guggenheim equally compelling to 'visiting' Guggenheim. This book masterfully does same. I want to read more books by Mr. Levine, particularly his intellectual journey through his memoir.

Ed Snider is a senior software engineer, speaker, and Xamarin MVP based in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area. He has a passion for mobile design and development and regularly speaks about Xamarin and Windows app development at local user groups and community events. A Great Next Step

So maybe you know some c#. Maybe you used to do WPF or Silverlight, and are looking to start working on the mobile platforms. Maybe you know iOS or Android and are looking at this cross-platform thing. Or maybe you are like me and know "Classic Xamarin" pretty well and have been looking for an excuse to learn Xamarin Forms. Well, look no further.

There is a ton of information out there on the internet about Xamarin and Xamarin.Forms - and programming in general. Most of it us uncurated, so I typically turn to a book to get a head start. On this topic, I read the introductory book (Creating Mobile Apps with Xamarin.Forms by Petzold) and found it to be a bit too introductory for me. This book however was great at taking some of the patterns we all know and love (like navigation, and MVVM) and showing how to execute them in real world examples. Exactly what I needed to get proficient quickly. It will be a good reference to have on the shelf.

Awesome book to get up to speed quickly

I love seasoned developer-centric books like this. I know C# like the back of my hand but have never used Xamarin and that's exactly who this book is for. This is no introduction to C#, development concepts or object oriented programming, look elsewhere to get up to speed on those concepts first. But if you're an able C# developer this book rules for getting up to speed quickly on Xamarin. There is minimal overview and tons of "let's just do it" chapters. I'm amazed how quickly I was up and running with a functional cross-platform app. Yes, you have to look up anything you don't understand elsewhere, just keep a web browser handy. I had to get up to speed on dependency injection and unit testing which were new to me, but easy enough to comprehend. Again, not for newbies by any means but a great book if you know C# and basic OO already.

My only complaint and it's nit picky is I wish the downloadable code had snapshots for each chapter. The code you download is as of the end of the book and the code evolves considerably over the course of the book so cutting and pasting becomes tricky early on if you want to avoid typing in some of the lengthier sections. You can cut and paste from the Kindle edition for a while, but eventually you run out of chances as the publisher sets a cut and past limit.

Still highly recommended.

Good but too light on details

The book contains numerous techniques and is fairly good at describing them at a high level, however that's about as much as this book is good for. If you want to know in-depth about the techniques then look elsewhere since this book, by design, does not get into the nitty gritty as much as would be needed to really understand and implement the techniques listed. Still, a very handy resource to have in your bookshelf.

Great book for Business Analysis

I bought this book along with its companion "Business Analysis" and love both of them. I was recently transitioned into a new business analysis role at work and bought a lot of books and did a lot of research on my new role. This book is by far the best out there. The material is presented clearly and it's very easy to follow. They have some great template examples and really help you understand each step of the business analysis process. I highly recommend this book to any business analyst... new or seasoned.

Solid Business Analysis Framework and Field Manual

Reviewing this book in the context of it being one of the 11 books recommended to read to prepare for the PM-PBA, book 1 or 11. The book proposes a life-cycle Business Analysis from; Business Strategy and Objectives, Investigate Situation, Consider Perspectives, Analyze Needs, Evaluate Options, to Define Requirements. The Authors then create a framework by laying 99 techniques into the framework at various stages.

It is an interesting approach, and probably a curative to many of the poorly designed portfolios, programs, and projects when helping to guide the hands of an experienced practitioner. The novice to intermediate practitioner might find the lack of detail on techniques frustrating, this is more of a BA Field Manual than a "How To". Found this book expensive but liked it. Encyclopedic feel. I will use it professionally.
