The Sanskrit term is usually translated as "perfections," but the practices are best understood as a set of virtuous actions. An accomplished Western interpreter of the Tibetan branch of Buddhism, which has its arcane aspects, Surya Das explains each of the 10 virtues, offering numerous exercises and tips to apply his teaching. This is all firmly grounded in traditional stories and the examples of historical figures in Buddhism. Surya Das also offers examples of Westerners who embody these virtues, from the Catholic saint Damien, who worked with lepers on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, to Oprah Winfrey, a model of shrewd and skillful action. While the material is helpful, the exposition rambles and is often hard to follow. Some individual chapters read as though they were pasted together. Quotes from famous non-Buddhist figures are thrown in like salt ("Mark Twain, one of my favorite American authors, said..."). Other authors, particularly Sylvia Boorstein, have done more engaging and readable treatments on the 10 virtues. This underedited volume requires patience to absorb.

BUDDHA IS AS BUDDHA DOES may prove to be the most important spiritual book I've read in my ten years as a meditator and practitioner. While most Buddhist and spiritual authors effectively express much-needed wisdom and perspective to apply to our hectic, and often frightening, world today, Lama Surya Das shows us how to put that wisdom into practice to make a real and lasting difference in our lives. The book outlines the Bodhisattva Code, an ancient, time-tested guide to enlightened living, which we can live by immediately for our own and others' benefit through the recommendations and practices offered within. It clearly spells out how to improve and strengthen all our relationships, including with ourselves.

For the beginner stepping on the Buddhist path for the first time, BUDDHA IS AS BUDDHA DOES describes that path in all its richness. For the activist, spritual or otherwise, it is a true resource that will guide its readers with wit, wisdom and a wealth of practical knowledge. Add to all that the fact that the book was a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Incredible - Don't Let the Title Discourage You

I saw the title and thought to myself, "Is Lama Surya Das, beloved author of Awakening the Buddha Within" writing a Recipe Card style personal development book cloaked in the Buddhist tradition? Argh!"

Well - this is a book about personal development. It is a book that has a touch of that "recipe style" that American authors "eat up" - but in this case what is delivered to "the table" is so much more than I could have ever hoped for or expected it is challenging to put it succinctly into words.

Right from the beginning I knew there was something happening.

In the preface, Surya Das is teaching about the term "Bodhisattva" - as "an awakened being" or"helpful spiritual altruist, activist, service-oriented leader, seeker of wisdom, truth, unconditional love, deathless peace and ultimate enlightener."

Wow.

And that is what the book then goes to teach its readers.

How to be a Boddhisvatta - using wisdom not only from ancient Buddhist teachers but also the likes of Edna St. Vincent Millay, Dr. Seuss, Mother Teresa and lets not forget "backyard Bodhisattva" known to the reader as "Exxon Ken"... an owner of a service station who once helped out the young Surya Das through generosity and caring....

The entire book is filled with stories, lessons and examples and ends, quite fittingly, with a Spiritual Revolutin and Enlightenment Prayer.

This is a phenomenal title that needs to be experienced, not simply read.

Buddhism is truly a miraculous tradition--thank God for it

This is the first of Lama Surya Das's books that I have read and it will not be the last. Buddha Is as Buddha Does is the most practical and useful book I have read yet on Buddhism for the modern American mind. The wisdom within its pages can be appreciated and applied by Buddhists and non-Buddhists (such as myself) alike.

Lama Surya Das guides his readers along a ten-step path towards spiritual enlightenment utilizing the original six paramitas (perfections) of the Buddha: generosity, ethical behvaior, patience, heroic effort, mindfullness through meditation, and wisdom, and appends the four additional practices of Mahayana Buddhism: skillful means, spiritual aspirations, higher accomplishments, and awakened awareness. It is as if this book has two parts, the first encompassing the original six practices on how to live a life of selfless compassion. The second part outlining the latter four practices borders on the mystical or miraculous, but enlightnment itself is a miracle in our modern world.

For those like myself who wish to live a better, more fullfilled life while still adhering to the mundane necessities of contemporary life, such as meeting sales quotas to pay the mortgage, etc., this is a useful book. What I appreciate the most is that although Lama Surya Das is a lama trained in Tibetan Buddhism, he demonstrates a knowledge of all religions, including in this book inspirational passages from the Christian bible, Sufi mystics, and his own Jewish roots, as well as other schools of Buddhism such as Zen. It is this inclusiveness that has attracted me to Buddhist literature. Furthermore, Lama Surya Das is a rarity in that he is a Buddhist who openly seems to believe in God, although he describes the word "God" as a placeholder for an abstract higher consciousness or reality. The title of my review is an actual quote from the book. He also includes such messages as "Thank God for the Dharma," and "When you learn to give yourself, it may claim all of your energy, body, and soul, but you will receive in return God's heart, Buddha's mind." He even ruminates on the possibility of reuiniting with deceased relatives in Heaven. On the surface, these may seem like contradictions to the Buddhist faith, but on further investigation, it is not hard to see the value of such wisdom as a means of transcending this world of pain and suffering into an existence that is truly enlightened through compassionate living.

Brilliant book on Algorithms and Data Structures

First of all, let me tell you on advance that I have not finished the book, but I am not nearly close to the "first pages" either: I think I have read enough of it to give it a good evaluation. I will post updates later, as need arises. UPDATE: I have already finished the book.

I don't know. Maybe it's because its presentation, the way the author narrates, or just because the renown of the book makes you biased, but as soon as you start reading the very first pages you know you are in for something very special. You know that, after reading this book, you will be a much better computer scientist. I will not lie: I am still in attending college, but I have always been a great programmer, and in all my programming classes I am top of the class. I was really full of myself before buying this book. How wrong was I!

The first thing you get after the preface is some advices on the exercises. The author tells you how some of them are really hard, or some are just really easy, etc. He also states that "There are far too many exercises for you to do read and assimilate them all..." When I read this, I gleaned each section and the amount of exercises (there are literally, thousands), and I said to myself: "I will work on, at the least, 80% of the exercises on each section. I will never avoid the hard or very hard ones" (Sedgewick explicitly tells you how to differentiate them). Alas, even some exercises that are not considered to be hard have been hell on me. Until know, I have been true to my word, but I will get into that later.

Of course, this book is not about the exercises, is about Algorithms, and I'd be dammed if Sedgewick is not considered among the best authors of all times on the topic. I've read other books on Algorithms, and I always find that most books fit into one of these two spectrums: either they are recipes, or they are strictly academic, with little practical use. Algorithms in C++ is neither. Sedgewick makes a deep and interesting analysis on the properties of each algorithm (and data structure), concentrating at first on its abstract properties, not even daring talk about implementations. He is extremely clear in his language. Look, I am an Ecuadorian, living in Ecuador, and my English is pretty much what I have learned in my school or by myself. I can understand Sedgewick perfectly. I don't think I have had to reread a thing twice because the writing was obscure.

After being all abstract and wonderfull and stuff, Sedgewick then implements, and he does so magnificently. Yes, he may have not the best of C++ practices (for example, he explains what C++ operator delete does, but seems to dislike the use of it), or even good programming practices at all (you have, in one program, variables named like: p, a, x, y, z, f), but his implementations are nevertheless clear, straight to the point and efficient. He also constantly reminds the reader how important is to separate implementations from abstract concepts, but also explains the advantages certain implementations have against others.

So, you have learned the concept of the algorithm and it's properties, implemented it, and just when you think it as all over, Sedgwick goes ahead and refines the abstract model of the algorithm, implements it again, and thus a refinement iteration process emerges! All this is aided by graphics, more programs, and clear and concise definitions (which are separated from the text in italics). This whole process is done in one section or many. For example, he explains Pushdown-Stacks in several sections, but using this same process. Don't get me wrong now, Sedgwick does not use a "template" for explaining each topic: he will change his ways of explaining things if necessary, and as a whole the book reads very naturally, it never gets old or repetitive.

Once you finish each section, you get a bunch of exercises. Trust me: WORK ON THEM. Especially the ones marked with unfilled circles. They will bring new insights on the topic (whereas after such grand explanations, you would think more insight could not be obtained). As I said before, I have worked, until now, on more than the 80% of all the exercises. Some require background programming experience, some a high level of math (but not never too high), and they will slow your reading down (there are loads and loads of them!), but if you do them, you will be cool. Your projects will be most efficient and elegant. Teachers will admire your work (though secretly you know they should be admiring Robert Sedgewick).

One final note: this is not an academic book on the analysis of algorithms. This book is strictly for people who really want to put the best algorithms and data structures into practice. Sedgewick will tell you about the O notation, and what it means for an algorithm to run proportional to some function, but it is not the goal of the book to make you sit down and mathematically extract the efficiency of an algorithm. For this Sedgwick has another book, which people hail and glorify too. But with Algorithms in C++ (and C, and Java) you will be able to sit in front of a computer, analyze some problem (or a previously implemented solution to that problem) and determine the most effective way of solving it (or if you can replace the code with a more efficient one).

If you want to _really_ understand red-black trees.....

Any professional programmer would benefit from having these books at hand. Excellent discussions of the basic algorithms which every programmer needs to know.

But I would like to particularly highlight the discussions on binary and n-ary search trees. The most enlightening discussion in print, giving the reader a real synoptic view of search tree algorithms, how they evolved, and their culmination in red-black trees.

Other reviewers have mentioned that the algorithms as presented here seem to be just warmed=over versions of their C counterparts presented in the C edition of this work. There is a germ of truth to this, but I really don't consider it to be a valid criticism of the books. The point here is not to present C++ coding techniques, but to understand algorithms. If you want to know what a state-of-the art C++ implementation of Red-Black trees looks like, just read the source code which comes with the GNU compiler toolchain. But you're not going to have a prayer of understanding it until you first understand how Red-black trees work--that's where this book comes in. If you are trying to explain the Red-black tree algorithm, you don't want all of the C++ do-dads and optimizations, templates, etc, all cluttering up the presentation of the skeletal algorithm.

It's hard for me to say if this would be a great resource for someone who is new to these subjects

As a trained hypnotist (giving me a beyond average understanding of the subconscious, and in my particular training, the superconscious), and someone who has had kinesiology used many, many times successfully, by numerous alternative health practitioners over many years, I found this book to be quite profound. It wove many different things I am quite familiar with into a much broader fabric, and deeper understanding - confirming so much that I already know, but carrying it much farther as well.
It's hard for me to say if this would be a great resource for someone who is new to these subjects. However, if you have exposure to this vein of thought, this is an excellent read. I would expect, that if you are interested enough to have made it as far as reading reviews, it's probably a good pick.

Mind blowing

Read this book in 2007 only to put it down do to lack of understanding or resonance. I finally picked this book back up again to read almost a decade later do to Peter Sage's recommendation. I haven't been able to put the book down. This book is unfolding mysteries that flow with my life that seem to have slipped away from me a decade ago. Absolutely mind blowing!

An eye opening and fascinating read

This is a fascinating book that goes way beyond what is needed to prove that muscle testing works and has value far beyond what I ever imagined. In addition, this book is a lesson is how to raise your energy to a higher level and gives a clear guide on what a person should be shooting for. The only reason I gave this book four instead of five stars is it's not an easy read. Dr Hawkins is a research scientist and writes like you would expect a research scientist to write. I highly recommend this book as it will open your eyes to what's possible for you along with the entire human race.

"Welcome to Hell, Princess."

Mother humper on toast...Victoria and Jinsey, you all are killing me! There is a reason that all of us betas, and bloggers, and readers grab this book as soon as possible and don't stop until we finish. I freaken love this series SO much and nothing will change that. Wild At Heart completely ups the thrill factor and I just adored all the evil turns in this book.

Can I just re-hash how much I adore Archer and Dax? Because I do. Oh how I do...so much. They are my sexy babies and they give that comic relief and heart-melting "how amazing are you moments" to the story in a side character and I couldn't love them more.

With Dare and Ree, they've been through the ringer of family drama, work drama, and even lovers drama...but now they've got one more obstacle to get over and it by far is the most intense. I root for these two so hard. I adore them together and their chemistry. Happily ever after for these two, please! They so deserve it. And Dare and the "stomach scene"... heart... completely... melted.

This novella series is seriously one of the best! If you haven't started reading these, you must! There is so much drama, so many intense moments, sexiness, side characters to love, and thrills to the ceiling! Jinsey and Victoria are just slaying the new adult market with these novellas and I couldn't be happier about it. Cannot wait till the final book in Dare's series!!! Happily ever after, please. Team phoenix FTW! :)

Another Fun, Passionate, Dangerous Installment in the Untamed Series!

Wild at Heart, book four of the Untamed Series, takes readers on another wild Dare and Ree journey through the roller coaster of their lives. This installment picks up where book three left off with Dare fighting for his life while Ree fights to get to him battling her own demons and the urge to cope in the only way she’s known her entire life. Fighting. Battling. Limits being tested. Dare and Ree embrace for the fight of their lives against two people they should never in their lives have to face.

The unthinkable act of violence leading Dare to where he is at the start of the book begins to unravel when Ree arrives in New York City. More secrets are revealed as questions are asked while danger lurks around every corner. A web of deceit, corruption, and treachery surround Dare and Ree. The perception of the lives they lead and the actual truth jumbled in the minds of the public, twisted by a heinous man giving only Dare, Ree, and the readers the truth. Can the truths uncovered finally give them peace?

This book shows the growth of this heroine by leaps and bounds. She finds strength in herself to stand up to the most formidable opponent in her life. She’s tested tremendously, her love for Dare supporting her stand against herself and her foe. Ree become a much stronger woman in this book and it was awesome to read.

Dare makes choices in this book that at first I didn’t agree with but reading further understanding those choices and the reasons why makes him that much more alluring. His protective nature and safety he provides to those he loves make him the man we want. We want that feeling of protection even if it causes a separation we don’t agree with. He’s man of his word and I love that about Dare.

As in the nature of this series, there is no shortage of angst. The characters spend time apart in this installment creating desire thick with sexual tension. Wrapped with the love of each other and the art that drew them together at first and now binds them even more securely, Dare and Ree’s moments of passion are so beyond hot. Coupled with the acceptance Dare reaches of Ree not only himself but the reader are left in awe of her. The secondary cast – Wilde family members – are present again, although not as much, still making a big impact. Of course it wouldn’t be complete without the two villains of the story. With no redeeming qualities in either man, the conflict ensuing because of them ignites a fire in the reader, especially when we start losing those we care about.

The Untamed series is simply addicting. The characters are real people living in a world of hurt; their fighting against time, against themselves, and against people who should have their best interests at heart. The dynamic that has grown between Dare and Ree amazes me, the strength they pull from each other. It’s evocative and edge of your seat reading. And yes, there’s a cliffhanger. Embrace the cliffhanger! It’s tempting and fun making you fully invested in the journey of Dare and Ree.

An exciting, sexy, roller-coaster of a ride!

OMG. Couldn't put this one down, and I had to wait until my heart stopped racing to sit down calmly and write this review. I've been a fan of this series from novella #1, and not until now did I realize exactly how WHOLLY invested I was in these characters and their story. Okay... maybe I had an inkling of how much I loved Dare Wilde from day one, but his story is even more compelling in this installment because of his father's presence... a truly evil, remorseless presence that adds so much external drama that it raises the stakes higher than they've ever been. Ree's story is more satisfying than ever in this installment because she finally stands up to her (equally evil, IMO) Goliath of a father and makes the clean break from any lingering sort of dependency that she has on her family and from her pills. Ree really was incredible in this one, and I was so glad to see her pull on her OWN strengths, not just rely on Dare's.

Throughout it all, Dare and Ree fight for each other. It's utterly heartwrenching to have Dare start out in the story so physically broken, and there was another completely heartbreaking moment that I'm not going to spoil... But to even it out, there were several moments when I literally cheered out loud. Dare and Ree make a bigger leap than they ever have before in this story. They're finally willing to COMMIT to one another, to protect each other equally, and it is so GOOD to finally see them pull together as a team when push comes to shove. It's a roller-coaster of a ride for them, and for me as a reader as I braced myself the entire time for the huge bomb to drop... And the ending... oh, the ending...
Somebody please give me a hug. And the final installment, STAT.

About the Author

John A. Van de Walle was a professor emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a leader in mathematics education who regularly offered professional development workshops for K–8 teachers in the United States and Canada focused on mathematics instruction that engaged students in mathematical reasoning and problem solving. He visited many classrooms and worked with teachers to implement student-centered math lessons. He co-authored the Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics K–6 series and contributed to the original Pearson School mathematics program enVisionMATH. Additionally, John was very active in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), writing book chapters and journal articles, serving on the board of directors, chairing the educational materials committee, and speaking at national and regional meetings.

 

Karen S. Karp is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Prior to entering the field of teacher education she was an elementary school teacher in New York. Karen is the volume editor of Annual Perspectives in Mathematics Education: Using Research to Improve Instruction and is the co-author of Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Discovering Lessons for the Common Core State Standards in Grades K-5 and Putting Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction into Practice Pre-K – Grade 2. She is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and a former president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. She continues to work in classrooms with teachers of students with disabilities.

 

Jennifer M. Bay-Williams is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Jennifer taught elementary, middle, and high school in Missouri and in Peru, and continues to work in classrooms at all levels with students and with teachers. Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also authored and co-authored numerous books, including: Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8, Mathematics Coaching: Resources and Tools for Coaches and Other Leaders. Jennifer is on the Board of Directors for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and has previously served on the Board of Directors for TODOS: Equity for All and as secretary and president for the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).

Great Resource!

I have been teaching math for 10 years and read this book for a graduate class. It is such a great resource for new and veteran teachers! It offers realistic ways for teachers to move away from the "traditional" way most teach with direct instruction and move toward student-centered problem solving strategies. I'm hoping the cost of it goes down so it is more accessible for people because it is changing the way I teach!

This book is an amazing resource for an elementary school teachers. I had the pleasure of taking a college course taught by one of the writers, using this book. This is truly one of the most valuable college textbooks I have used. I imagine that I will be referencing it several hundred times in my career. It's great! One of the best features is that each chapter has a list of children's literature that goes with the concept taught! So helpful!

This book is an amazing, practical resource for anyone teaching elementary and middle school mathematics. Van de Walle's clear, concise explanations of mathematical practices and procedures are easy to follow and implement. His practical examples and follow up activities are superb.

Not a comprehensive drug guide

I've always favored Davis's over other drug guides, but when I have to pull out the Mosby's to look for drugs that are not listed in the Davis's it really irritates me. They may very well be found within the Davis's online drug database, but if I wanted to look online for them I wouldn't have ordered a tangible book. I would've just bought an access code for online or an iPhone app. If you're looking for a comprehensive drug book, you'll end up frustrated. Guessing I should've tried Pearson.

A must-have for a nurse. I prefer the paperback to the phone app. Every week I use it at least once. The only complaint is that is doesn't contain all classes of drugs. Except for one medication that was listed two editions back that isn't present now, I love this book. It is designed for a nurse and quick reference.

Great book but disappointed by the gottcha

I bought this book for nursing school knowing aot of people recommended it. The content is good but if you want to take advantage of the free 1 year online access DON't buy the kindle edition it comes with no access code. I bought this because we are required to have our books on our tablets but also wanted access to updated information. I was looking at buying a care plan book as well (the one we are supplied by Elsevier leaves alot to be desired). I will not buy kindle again.
