A must-read book for those studying Fethullah Gulen

Erkan Kurt’s compilation of Fethullah Gulen’s lead articles came to me very auspicious effort in many ways. Introducing a self-exiled, moderate, and progressive preacher to the world is something we all need today, at a time when misconceptions about Islam are abound. It is really intriguing that a person like Fethullah Gulen has not been gained a global recognition enough by the intellectual and spiritual communities and traditions. Perhaps more interesting than this is the fact that still many people don’t have any idea what the “Hizmet” Movement or Gulen Movement, “a loose network of civic and humanitarian projects that include schools, tutoring centers, universities, hospital aid and relief organizations, interfaith and intercultural dialog organizations, publishing houses, and media outlets” (p.vii) is all about.

In his introduction, the editor Dr. Erkan Kurt (also the translator) describes Fethullah Gulen’s lifestyle as “very modest and yet socially active” (p.viii) which summarizes Gulen’s entire life journey; extremely humble, but also very interactive. Kurt also argues that Gulen is a moralist like Kant and a “wise teacher” like Ghazali or Rumi (p.ix). There are 40 essays in this reader collected in six chapters. Each chapter has its own theme.

Entitled Humanity & Civilization, the first chapter starts with humanity and takes it to concepts like “woman”, “ideal society”, “civilization”, and “nature”. But Gulen also touches some other concepts elegantly. Especially his description of love is simply brilliant. “Love does not fight for ascendancy, it is already enthroned” (p.3) is an apt description about love. “A person armed with love needs no other weapon” (p.5) is a strong argument against so-called fundamentalist Muslims.

Gulen, on the other hand, does not ignore the animal side of the human beings, his emphasis on our Hobbesian side (p.9) as well as the competition between our animal and angelic side is noteworthy (p.10). When talking about the women, he argues that “woman and man share the same divine creation and mission in the world; they are like two faces of a single reality” (p.25). In “The Ideal Society”, we see that it start with the ideal human, the prerequisite for such a society (p.31).

Gulen also makes comparisons between certain concepts. For instance, he compares “civilization” with “modernization”, contending that the latter “can change the appearance of life, but it does not necessarily civilize people” (p.35). Sometimes, his unique approach to a specific concept like nature is worth contemplating: “Nature was like a magnificent vessel sailing toward the country of love, or a chandelier with a thousand lights illuminating the realms beyond” (p.39). The very first chapter can be summarized as the place of humanity in God’s sight as well as the unique approach by Gulen to various concepts.

Second chapter, named Faith and Wisdom, is about the relationship between the believer and the God. Gulen again emphasizes love, seeing as the foundation of the believer’s actions. He mentions different types of love including the ones felt by the unbelievers towards people. Gulen distinguished all these types and thinks that love of God is the true type of love.

Chapter Three is called Morals and Sprituality. Gulen explains “heart”, “love” (again), “mercy”, “forgiveness”, “tolerance”, and “happiness”. Will take pages to expound on them, but for example, about heart we read this: “Today, we yearn for the stories of the heart, for in them we feel the reviving breaths of Jesus” (p. 82). In mercy, he associates it with nature: “Different voices and tunes merge in rhythms so perfect that only an all-encompassing mercy could be directing this mysterious music” (p.88).

The fourth chapter is Education. The editor selected the articles starting with the youth and then the philosophy of education Gulen adopts. As the source of inspiration of a social movement who focuses on education, Fethullah Gulen expresses his unique views on it. About a teacher, for example, he writes this: “One who grasps the significance of phenomena and builds associations between life and conscience. The teacher hears the truth in everything and can express it n any language. School is like a laboratory for future generations, and the teacher is its physician. The teacher is the one who can heal our social ailments and remove the dark clouds from our horizon” (p.119). Gulen’s main concern is to “cultivate virtue in youth” (p.123). He wants the pupils to have two wings, one filled with positive science and the other with virtue. That is why, Gulen thinks that humanity is at a crossroads to “elevate our children to the truth of their humanity or abandon them to alienation” (p.130).

People of Service is the name of Chapter Five. As the name suggests it is about the general characteristics of the people in the Movement. Gulen describes these people with many phrases, but “the people we are longing for” (p.133), “the architects of our future” (p.135), and “devout architects of our souls” (p.143) are equally striking. Gulen adds more words when describing these people. “In them, there is no quarrel between spirit matter” (p.134) says Gulen, bringing so-called faith/science clash to our attention. On an interesting note, in the article dated March 1991, Gulen states that “the new person… will utilize all possible means for reaching the minds and the heart of people, from publication to mass media” (p.140). It is no surprise that Gulen Movement or Service Movement is very active in mass and social media.

But perhaps the most conspicuous aspect of those people is the self-sacrifice. “So that Others may Live”, as the title of the book, summarizes Gulen’s purpose of life in this world. In many places of the book, he reiterates the same philosophy through different combination of sentences. “He suffers so that others may not suffer. his tears flow so that others may not weep. If he does not serve others, he considers himself worthless” (p.64), “True virtue lies in living for the sake of others” (p.95), “… he readily sacrifices his own felicity for the happiness of others” (p. 105), “… devout ones, who are not concerned with their own felicity and who understand that their own prosperity is intimately tied to the prosperity of others” (p.143), “they neglect themselves in order to better serve others” (p.145)

The final chapter is entitled Islam. Most of the chapter is dedicated to various characteristics of Islam with the very last article, the longest one in the book, is exclusively about Prophet Muhammad. When talking about Islam’s message to humanity, Gulen is concise: “(Islam) is rooted in divine revelation, remains within the framework of human reason, respects human feelings, and is enriched by inspiration (p.173). Gulen explanation to jihad is also a must-read.

In general, this book is a very useful compendium of articles to know better the life philosophy of Fethullah Gulen and the movement he inspired as well as the Islamic concepts which form its foundation. The editor, Dr. Kurt, does an excellent job with the selection and translation.

Unique scholar

Excellent book to examine Mr Fethullah Gulen's thoughts and ideas. He is a prominent Islamic scholar and social activist. No doubt, there are a lot of brilliant scholar in Islamic world. But he is the one of the unique example of Turkic Islamic world to mobilize individuals for working to peace of humanity. Great read. A little short

Exactly like as the title says. It is a great read, but unfortunately the book will leave you wanting for more.

The Book of Nod presents the history of the vampires as thought for Vampire:The Masquerade. This novel can be enjoyed even by those that are not familiar with the Masquerade setting and other novels. It offers the big picture, explains how the vampires came to be, has great quotes and "commandments", if you will, that vampires are supposed to live by. You will understand the vampire clans and what their traits are and the reader is bound to have a favorite one out of the bunch.

About the Author
Octavio Paz (1914-1998) was born in Mexico City. He wrote many volumes of poetry, as well as a prolific body of remarkable works of nonfiction on subjects as varied as poetics, literary and art criticism, politics, culture, and Mexican history. He was awarded the Jerusalem Prize in 1977, the Cervantes Prize in 1981, and the Neustadt Prize in 1982. He received the German Peace Prize for his political work, and finally, the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1990.

Eliot Weinberger is an essayist and translator, the editor of The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry, and the series editor of Calligrams: Writings from and on China (New York Review Books and Chinese University of Hong Kong Press). He lives in New York City.

A stunning collection from a powerful and vivid poet. Paz's sense of urgency and perception is almost elemental.

It's been years since I've read Paz, and his poetry is just as strong as I remember.

In fact I'm going to go out on a limb and say that no modern poet with the possible exception of Allan Ginsburg has such a rich and powerful sense of description as Paz. The opening poem 'Mutra' especially, is just a gorgeous overflow of reveries, symbols and perceptual shifts. It alone makes this book worth buying.

Paz's repertoire of images is unbeatable precisely because of how elemental it is. The sun, the moon, water, stones, darkness, sunlight...he constantly returns to these primordial sensations and always manages to make them feel vital and lived in, no matter how often he uses them. I highly recommend this, or really any of his collections of poetry.

Poetic Ambassador

A Tale of Two Gardens is a collection of poems dealing with Nobel laureate Octavio Paz relationship with the great nation of India. He made many trips there over the years. Paz was also the Mexican ambassador to India. (He resigned the position in 1968 to protest government assault on protesters.) There were still later sojourns to India afterwards. Mutra is a really strong poem. It is a flower that grows with each subsequent reading. Few cities have ever been so aptly honoured. Another of the poems I like is The Balcony. Wind From All Compass Points is another standout. The whole collection is a grand achievement. India is the most enduring civilization on the planet. It is only fitting that one of the most enduring poets of the twentieth century should write a poetic tribute. These poems were written over a period of forty years. The love and passion Paz feels for Indian culture and peoples is recurrent in these poems. This was truly his second home. It was the second garden so to speak. And from this love of India came a great gift of poetry for the rest of the world to read and know.

Stunning Lucidity

Osho (Bagwan Shree Rajneesh)has a unique way to write with a stunning lucidity that speaks directly to your personal experience. This book is one such example of his way with words and metaphors. The writing discusses the analogy of tea ceremony in light of life experience, as a means to deepening spiritual attainment and bring a sense of clarity to your actions.

He brings up the parables of Zen masters Nansen and Joshu and Nan-In among others. He mentions a simple meditation to bring awareness to the moment, and lists several teas along with their benifits.
In this short book, he manages to convey a lot, not in the sense of quantity, but quality. I am amazed that despite his contrivercial background and outright criminal actions, his teachings are as deep and profound as I found them to be. Definitely worth a read, if you are looking for a bit of profound insight in your daily life.

When I first started to look at this "book" when I was on-line, I thought that it was interesting, but it wasn't until I saw it in the flesh that I realized that it is a BOXED SET book, including two lovely tea cups and a tea ceremony mat!!

You'll never see tea the same

Osho tries hard to differentiate himself from dogma, classification, and even Zen. His book, 'The art of tea' is no different. Osho talks highly of tea, and one can't help seeing tea in an almost divine light after reading the book. To Osho, tea is religion, zen, and life itself. A cup of tea is not only great before meditation (to stay awake) but is a meditation in itself.

The book is pocket sized and can be read in a matter of hours. The prose is simple and clean, with the reader wanting more of Oshos inexplainable teaching. Not to worry, Osho has 600 books and thousands of audio discourses.

About the Author
Colleen Coover lives in Portland, OR with her husband, fellow writer Paul Tobin. She is a member of Periscope Studio, a collective of more than twenty artists and writers who share a studio space in downtown Portland. Her comics include the adult title Small Favors and the all-ages Banana Sunday, and I frequently contribute comic strips to a variety of Marvel Comics. My illustrations appear in newspapers, magazines, and promotional materials. Paul Tobin is comic book writer whose best known works include: The Age of the Sentry, Marvel Adventures: Fantastic Four, Marvel Adventures: Super Heroes, Marvel Adventures: Spider-Man, and other titles predominantly for Marvel Comics. Wook Jin Clark was born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in the South Carolina and Georgia. Now residing in Portland, Oregon, he is a member of Periscope Studio. He illustrated “The Return of King Doug” in late 2009 for Oni Press, which was named to the ALA Great Graphic Novels for Teens list in 2010. His new ongoing creator owned series, “MEGAGOGO”, also with Oni Press will commenced in February 2014. He recently completed a spinoff Adventure Time mini-series (Adventure Time: The Flip Side) for BOOM! Studios with fellow studio mates, Colleen Coover and Paul Tobin.

Adventure Time book that focus on the insanity

One of the thing some people love about Adventure Time is the insanity of it, and this book embraced it. Is a fun adventure all around and managed to give the reader a mind bending trip of insanity.

Through the Smoke of Budapest 50 Years On The February 2006 Conference of the London Socialist Historians Group was held at the Institute of Historical Research in central London, one of a series of such conferences over the previous ten years. Assembled were a modest group of academics and activists come to mark the 50th anniversary of the events of 1956, and to do so in a particular way. Firstly by presenting new historical research on the questions under review rather than trotting out tired orthodoxies. Secondly by linking historical inquiry to political activism. It was queried why such a conference was held in February 2006 rather than in the autumn, and the answer was a simple one. To intervene historically in the debates of the year by setting a socialist historical agenda for doing so. The opening plenary heard from Sami Ramidani, an Iraqi exile now lecturing at a British University, from Stan Newens, who had been present at the protests in 1956 and from Nigel Wilmott, the letters editor of the Guardian but here speaking about Hungary. The flavour was one both of historical recall of the events of 1956 and of contemporary political parallels. Indeed during this session news came through via text message that the left-wing MP George Galloway had been detained in a Cairo jail overnight and an emergency protest called at the Egyptian Embassy for later in the day. The next two sessions focused on the key moments of autumn 1956, Hungary and Suez but again with new research examining their wider significance. Mike Haynes looks at the origins of the Hungarian revolt, in terms of workplace politics while Anne Alexander reviews the impact that Suez had on Nasser s reputation within the Arab world and Arab nationalist politics. In the afternoon there was a widening of the focus. One session examined the impact of the events of 1956 on left-wing organisation and in particular the orthodox Communist or Stalinist tradition. Terry Brotherton took a fresh look at the impact of 1956 on the Communist Party of GB, while Toby Abse focused on how the events of that year worked their way through in the largest of the Western European CPs, the Italian. Alan Woodward examined how the crisis of Stalinist politics opened new possibilities for libertarian left-wing ideas. The other focused on the rise of a new left as a result of the crisis of 1956. Paul Blackledge examined the development of the theory of socialist humanism by E.P Thompson and others as an alternative to Stalinism. Neil Davidson examined the ideas of a forgotten left-wing thinker from this period Alisdair Macintyre, while Christian Hogsberg reviewed the influence of an existing Trotskyist theorist, CLR James around the events of 1956 Of course the conference could not hope to cover the huge range of possible historical issues arising from the 50th anniversary of 1956. The beginnings of the consumer society and the age of affluence; the birth of youth culture and rock n roll; British nuclear tests and the origins of CND and campaigns against the bomb; the new theatre marked by look back in anger . Tobias Abse is Lecturer in Modern European History at Goldsmiths University of London. He is the author of 'Sovversivi e fascisti a Livorno: lotta politica e sociale (1918-1922), Francoangeli, Milan, 1991, and of numerous articles on 20th. century Italian history and politics, in particular on Italian communism. Terry Brotherstone lectures in history at the University of Aberdeen. He has edited or co-edited, and contributed to: Covenant, Charter and Party: revolt and protest in modern Scottish history (1989); The Trotsky Reappraisal (1992), History, Economic History and the Future of Marxism (1996); Gendering Scottish History: an international approach (1999); and These Fissured Isles: Ireland, Scotland and British history, 1798-1848 (2006). Amongst the subjects he has also written about are: the Declaration of Arbroath, Scottish Common Sense philosophy, Chartism, Red Clydeside, the 1984-85 miners strike, the oral history of the North Sea oil and gas industry, and Marxism and cultural history. From the mid-1980s until the mid-1990s he was a regular arts correspondent for the weekly Workers Press Neil Davidson is the Secretary of the Edinburgh Central Branch of the Public and Commercial Services Union, an activist in the Socialist Workers Party and a Public Interest Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde. Keith Flett is the convenor of the socialist history seminar at the Institute of Historical Research in central London. He is the author of numerous letters and articles and has recently published Chartism After 1848. He is the chair of Haringey Trades Union Council and an activist in the IT professionals union Connect. Mike Haynes has written widely on patterns of social and economic change. He is currently researching the changing patterns of accumulation and labour relations in the former Soviet bloc with a special focus on continuities and discontinuities Christian Hogsbjerg is undertaking doctoral research into the late Trinidadian intellectual CLR James (1901-1989) and his relationship to British society, and have had articles on James published in Socialist History, Revolutionary History and International Socialism journal. Stan Newens - Labour MP for Epping 1964-70; Labour & Co-operative MP for Harlow 1974-83; Labour & Co-operative MEP for London Central 1984-99; author of various articles, pamphlets and books on historical and political subjects. About the Author

Gailand MacQueen holds advanced degrees in philosophy, theology, and educational theory; and has been a professor of and lecturer in Religious Studies. With his wife, Joyce, he has led workshops and developed educational programs based on the labyrinth for both adults and youth. He is a member of the United Church of Canada, and lives in Sudbury, Ontario.

More Than Puzzles

As an agnostic, I have walked the turf labyrinth at Saffron Walden in England, and found myself a little dizzied, pleased with myself, and appreciative of the generous souls who more than four centuries ago (no one really knows how long) cut the original pattern into the turf for the instruction and amusement of anyone who happened by. Those of a more spiritual turn, however, take things further. In _The Spirituality of Mazes and Labyrinths_ (Northstone), Gailand MacQueen has looked at his subjects from the view of a professor of Religious Studies and one who has held workshops featuring the lessons that can be learned from the labyrinth. He features a historical evaluation of both mazes and labyrinths, and many interpretations of what they might mean for different cultures and times. It is a book of only 128 pages, and as befits a subject of such visual interest, there pictures on almost every page. There are also plenty of labyrinths to trace and mazes to solve. This is a lovely book to spend some hours with.

What is the difference between a labyrinth and a maze? MacQueen tells the working definition difference. A labyrinth is has one course, a convoluted path that once you start, if you simply continue following, you will get to the end, a goal in the center. A maze has choices, alternate paths, with some leading to the goal and some leading elsewhere or to dead ends. The simplicity of this distinction belies a complicated history. Labyrinths came first, are found in many cultures, and are over 3,500 years old. Many cathedrals have retained their labyrinths. It is fascinating that the labyrinth is part of the borrowings of Christianity from pagan sources. There are more and more labyrinths appearing, in stone, tile, weaving, and other media. There is even one in the yard of the jail at Brockville, Ontario, for the use of the inmates only. Mazes are much later developments, and come from garden mazes which started in the sixteenth century. Labyrinths had strictly religious (though diverse) origins, while mazes are secular; the change from labyrinths to mazes thus is just another reflection of how over the centuries strict religious order has given way to secular thinking. A labyrinth reflects trust and simplicity in following a set path; a maze, however, indicates complexity, confusion, and choices.

The beautiful illustrations here include photographs of many of the famous labyrinths and mazes mentioned, as well as diagrams that anyone interested will want to trace. There are useful citations to the many websites devoted to labyrinths and mazes, and there are even instructions on how to make your own walkable, transportable labyrinth. There are some tough mazes to solve here, including one that encompasses four pages of the book. In fact, the book itself is a "page maze" that will have you following directions to flip to different pages in order to get to the end page. This is a book that appeals because of cleverness and attractive appearance; it is thus itself like the mazes and labyrinths within.

Labyrinth spirituality

This is a beautifully written and researched book on labyrinths and mazes. Very clear explanations as to how using labyrinths can be a helpful tool for spiritual growth. Stunning photography accents the information provided. Many helpful aids in seeing the differences and the advantages to labyrinth and maze walking. Illustrations on how to draw various kinds of them, so if you want to "hand" walk one, you can make your own. It even has a pattern to make a needlepoint version if that appeals to you.
Good resources provided are and additional asset to the book.
