Thorough Overview of Exploration and Mining for Non Geologists and Non-Engineers

I am a Mining Analyst and Financial Modeller. The strengths of this book for me are:
(1) Strength in breadth with sufficient depth to whet the appetite to look elsewhere for greater depth
(2) Clear explanation of the key geological deposit types in everyday language. This is important because highly technical language and overly nuanced interpretation is a feature of many geology texts which makes them far less readable for non-geologists.
(3) The summaries of size and grade ranges of typical deposits is really useful and something I would have loved to have had starting out.
(4) Straightforward explanations of Mining and Metallurgical processes.
(5) Very good diagrams and photographs to illustrate key points with the diagrams and photos in colour close to the text to which they relate - good for visual learners.
(6) A good summary of the right questions to ask as an investor.
(7) Well edited with very few errors (although there is a bit of repetition).

The areas where greater explanation would be useful include:
(1) The text is very North American (even specifically Canadian) in emphasis and examples. Some greater discussion of other geological provinces and their similarities and differences would have been interesting (ie the Greenstone belts of W. Australia, West Africa and Guyana). In particular Africa and most of Oceania (Indonesia, PNG, Phillipines, Aus, NZ) get little or no mention. As an Australia I would say that, of course but it's a global business.
(2) A chapter on financial analysis of mining projects would probably be useful to most investors - perhaps not the standard DCF spiel but more if it picked out some of the key project differentiating aspects and gave examples of the magnitude of their impact (pit slope / ore to waste / recovery etc)

All in all it's clear the author was trying very hard to make the book accessible to non technical people and he's done a really good job of that. If a second edition incorporates the two items on my wish list the book will get my 5 stars.

Mining explained in a simplified way

This is a great book if one wants to know the cycle of mineral and mining from the formation of minerals to mining and all the process in between. Definitely I would recommend the book to anyone who works in the mining industry and is not a geologist, or anyone who is interested in mining and geology. It is one of the few mining/geology books I have come across that are able to make the subject entertaining and interesting to read. I work in a mine. Mill plant and underground drilling areas as shown in the book because of safety reasons are off-limit to most people working at the mine too. It is great to able to see in photos. This book is very detailed in all phases of mineral exploration and yet very interesting to read. A must-have book if you are into the subject of geology/mining.

Activities for English Language Learners

As a 6th grade teacher of a Bilingual/Transitional classroom I highly reccommend this book for students who are learning English as a second language. The activities in this book are geared towards helping students develop conversational English skills. A sample activity from the book might be locating items in a library. Students usually work in pairs. Each student will have similar maps of a library in front of them, the only difference is that some items are missing on one map where as the other map has those items and vice-versa. Each student takes turns asking questions and giving directions to locate items or to fill in the missing parts of the map. This of course is done in English. This helps students practice their conversational skills which they will need not only in an academic setting, but in the world at large as well. The author is extremely creative in developing activities that will not only engage the student to practice their fluency in English, but they will have fun as well! This book is appropriate for any age and any setting, academic or personal.

Great for Second Language Learners

This book was recommended to me by one of my lecturers in my MATESL classes. She was taught by Prof. Yorkey and saw this book in action during the initial development by Prof. Yorkey. I used it in Thailand with Assumption University students and had great fun with it. The students enjoyed it and were not timid in playing the games in the book. I can't think of a better book for teaching students to speak regardless of their previous language ability. If you can purchase this book, either new or used, it is worth just about any price. A great teaching tool.

Keeps conversation going

There are many activities to keep conversation going between two students or a student and a tutor. I have successfully used these activities with adult students who have English as a second language. Student A has the "A" page and Student B has the "B" page, and they have to work together to complete the pages, which means they have to speak English to each other. Great book.

Good book on historical math development

This compilation of essays on math is a fresh take on the development of mathematics. The book's premise is that mathematics and narrative are not as distinct as previously though, and that both mathematicians and philosophers/social scientists would benefit if they took this premise seriously. The book's authors are mathematicians and philosophers/social scientists; this mix makes the book interdisciplinary in a good way. I would have benefited from this book in high school. Some of the essays are much longer than others, I would've preferred a little bit more consistency in the form across the essays.

Not what I expected. It is unlike his other works, so I was not prepared for what was coming. For the serious student, this would be a good choice, but I would not recommend it for light reading. If you have read Uncle Petros, be ready for a very different read. In fact, only 1 of the 15 selections was written by Doxiadis

Forget the first story, Trapped is what you want.

Personally, I loved this. Not for the titular short story, but the rest of the content. Personally, I would prefer 20 Minutes of Terror be left out entirely, or put in with something else. Trapped and the preview for Tears were both so much better, starting off with the weakest story is a risky game. It seems, reading a couple of the other reviews, many people stopped after the first story, missing out on all the good stuff.

I deeply enjoyed Trapped, and was intrigued by the sample of Tears. The author seems to be creeping towards topics that interest me, and I may just have to read more one of these days, if I can afford it.

The editing was a little rough, especially in Trapped, but it wasn't enough to detract from the experience for me. I'll definitely be reading it again.

Not bad, just not good either

More like 2 3/4 star. Instead if two or three. I chose this book because the description intrigued me; that and the fact that the first part "20 Minutes of Terror," is true, as indicated by the author. Reading that one can be a little unnerving, especially if you dislike creepy stories. Let's just say I would be more than a little scared myself if someone were hiding in the back of my car too. That's just not a pleasant thought..... Better check your back seats from now on.

The second story, "Trapped," I didn't much care for; it started out okay, but then I became bored. I'm not saying the book was a bad read, I simply liked the first story more. Very short read.

Exciting??? Not!

It was pretty clear from the onset that this was not going where some people thought it would. To me it was a case of "let me write about one thing and make the reader think I was writing about something else." It's a short story for a reason. One being, there's nothing left to say. This was not particularly well written, the characters poorly developed, and the plot, well, it couldn't have gotten more mundane. This was not a winner.

John H. Armstrong is president of ACT 3 in Carol Stream, Illinois and served as a pastor for more than twenty years. He is an adjunct professor of evangelism at Wheaton College Graduate School. His online commentaries regularly appear at www.Act3online.com. He holds degrees from Wheaton College, Wheaton Graduate School, and Luther Rice Seminary. Excellent overview of baptism

This is a fantastic summary of four Protestant understandings of baptism: from the Baptist, Reformed, Lutheran, and Church of Christ perspectives. Each of the authors does a marvelous job of stating his case briefly and succinctly (all chapters are under 20 pages) and yet thoroughly -- I felt as though I grasped the core teachings of each perspective after I finished. The editor (John Armstrong) also offers a helpful introduction and conclusion, which point out some of the universally-held points of agreement among all the contributors, as well as the key issues on which they differ.

I fall within the Reformed perspective, and I was impressed by how the Reformed writer not only included several classic terms from Reformed theology (e.g., "covenant", "sign and seal", "means of grace") but also defined these terms and showed how they emerge from the Bible and not just from the Reformed Confessions. Other reviewers will have to assess whether they think the other 3 perspectives were as well-represented, but I thought all the chapters were very well-written. (Perhaps a few additional comments could have helped in a few areas. For example, neither of the two proponents of Infant Baptism addressed very strongly how the biblical data is somewhat inconclusive: just as there is no explicit command to baptize infants, neither is there an explicit command forbidding it; and just as there is no clear-cut example of an infant being baptized in Scripture, neither is there any example of an infant being presented for baptism by his or her parents, and being denied. But this is a small point.)

The respect that each of the authors has for each other is also evident: Several times they list points of agreement with the other positions which sound like they spring from genuine appreciation, and not from a patronizing attempt to avoid sounding too critical. Also, the editor readily admits in the opening introduction that there is no single position on baptism which is the definitive "Christian" or "biblical" view.

Other than the brevity of the chapters and the possibility of a few additional comments that would have solidified the authors' positions, the only other thing (that I can think of) that would have strenghtened this book would have been to include a Roman Catholic viewpoint: I'd be especially interested to hear how a Roman Catholic might respond to and critique the four views that are contained.

But this is a minor quibble. Overall, this book gives a wonderful presentation of four major views on baptism. The reader will come away with a well-balanced understanding of the main strengths and weaknesses of each position. And as an added bonus, the back of the book contains a series of appendices which include a concordance of all the occurences of the word "baptize" (and its derivatives) in the Bible, and a series of quotations from creeds, catechisms, and well-respected theologians that offer additional examples of the differing views on baptism. This book will be a welcome addition to the library of anyone wanting a broader understanding of baptism, as it is viewed by differing Christian traditions.

Great Discussion of Christian Views About Baptism

This is a great addition to the Counterpoints series. The format of previous volumes is retained. Each theologian has an essay about his view of baptism, and the others give brief replies.

The first one up at the plate is Thomas Nettles, who represents the Baptist view. He points out that the pattern for baptism is that it is something which follows belief. Therefore, Nettles would not baptize an infant. Nettles struggles somewhat as he tries to explain how difficult texts such as 1 Peter 3:21 and Acts 22:16 fit into his system.

The Reformed view is presented by Richard Pratt, Jr. He contends that infant baptism has a similar function to circumcision in the Old Testament in that it incorporates the child into the visible community (even though it does not confer saving grace on the child).

Nettles and Castelein countered Pratt by noting that Pratt placed an equal amount of emphasis on the Westminster Confession as he did the Bible, and that non_Reformed Christians would object to this. They note that our doctrine should come straight from Scripture.

Robert Kolb presents the Lutheran view, and it is very similar to the Reformed perspective. The main difference is that Lutherans believe that babies ARE born again when they are baptized. Nettles counters this by noting that that there are no known instances of salvation in the New Testament apart from hearing and responding to the gospel, an argument which struck me as quite cogent.

John Castelein presents the Church of Christ view. His presentation is very similar to the Baptist view. The one difference is that Castelein contends that baptism is the occasion for justification, a teaching that Pratt and Nettles effectively challenge.

Armstrong has a short essay encouraging continued dialogue, then there are appendixes which list all the scriptures about baptism and some of the confessional statements issued by the Church in the past.

I don't think that any one of the writers delievered a knockout punch, but my own understanding of Scripture fits best with the view of Thomas Nettles. I am surprised that non one discussed Acts 2:41, which says that "all who accepted the message were baptized." I wonder how infant baptizers would respond to this.

But I thought the essays were crisp and clear, and I like how each one ended with practical questions that people might ask, along with some good answers. Buy this book if you are sifting through your understanding of baptism.
