Self-taught artist Ron Tiner has worked as a freelance illustrator for more than 30 years. His comic work, book illustrations and writing on art has appeared in numerous publications throughout the US and the UK and he is renowned for his characterful and imaginative drawings.

Library Essential

Interested in learning from the best? Ron Tiner is a good place to start. A superb draftsman, here he focuses 'on how to bring your imagination into play when creating pictures.' The main concentration is 'on techniques you can use to make your drawing more inventive and your finished results more evocative for your audience - rekindling memories and moods- and better at communicating your selected narrative message.' While Ron's goal is illustration usually with figures included, the principles are universal. If you want to draw from imagination, Ron says the place to start is to 'draw anything and everything'. I have his other book, too, Figure Drawing Without a Model. In a world where we are told the highest form of art is to draw and paint from nature and from life, Ron demonstrates very convincingly there is another way. I touch on this in some detail in my book, Real Art Real Easy, also available on amazon. In fact, the artist's true purpose is not to report facts, but to record feelings.

Useful for the more advanced student.

From the outset, the tone of this book assumes the reader has already attained a fair level of competence in drawing - it is patently not a spoon-feeding, how-to book. There are no cosy guides to materials or techniques or the fundamentals of anatomy and perspective, just some pretty sound advice from an experienced artist and a large selection of his work to consider as examples. Some of his development methods are explained with much reliance on the work speaking for itself; some students may find this a little too bare or vague. The accompanying text is generally helpful and explanatory; he describes how he makes his decisions and his reasons for doing so, along with his choice and use of medium.
Although the book begins with a strong advocacy of working from life and keeping sketch books, it does quite abruptly move into the territory of imagination; there is quite a strong emphasis on narrative work - Tiner is after all, foremost an illustrator - and this becomes more apparent in later chapters; this is, I expect, in keeping with his particular discipline and may be a little too specialised for some - it is probably of most use to those who wish to follow his lead into commercial illustration or comic-book/graphic novel work.
Tiner is a very able graphic artist with a recognisable style and an eclectic output, making the volume a pleasant one to glance through; his sketch-work alone is exemplary. I should think any experienced student or practicing artist looking to tap into the reservoir of their imagination will at least find this an interesting book to have for reference.
Do use the "look inside" option if its available above; it may help you decide if this is a book for you - it may inspire you, or it may seem too narrowly aimed at commercial work.

Very interesting book

This is a very interesting book and for the price you cannot beat that. It goes beyond rendering "real-life" objects and give the reader/artist to explore their imagination in a fun and intriguing manner. An excellent book for any Artist.
