Wonderful Read, But Oh My...

I love nature writing, so to my mind, this is a grand book. All the great writers are here, with one exception: there is a signal lack of modern nature writers (last half of the 20th Century). Beyond that, the selection of great nature writers is first rate.
The real problem with this book is that it is so big and the binding so weak you really can't take this book into nature to read it. I took it with me during a trip to the north end of the Queen Charlotte Islands; the moment I found a spot to relax and got the book out, I found I was wrestling with a ten pound weight that flopped all over the place. So, a warning: this book is for the fireside or a cozy evening in bed, not the field. Otherwise, wonderful!

A trip through the natural world with its best guides

Although I purchased this book for a class I am taking it has proved to be a treasure I would want in my library. Recently I had a house guest who discovered Nature Writing on my coffeetable and could not put it down. I finally asked that a segment by Isak Dinnesen be read aloud as it was my homework. What followed was a great discussion.

Observation is the necessary ingredient to all good writing and Nature provides example after example on which to model your own writing if you happen to be a writer. If not the places you will go in reading from this anthology offer a telescope, microscope, and 6th Sense for you to enjoy, experience, and interpret nature. Begin your journey now. It is time well spent.

excellent acount on the history of Brazil/Portugal of the 1820's - 30's

This book is one of the first complete and an equilibrated account on the life of Dom Pedro, how he became Brazil's first Emperor and then abdicated to his son (later to become Dom Pedro II) and went back to Portugal to fight against his own brother. It covers not only his personal life and friendships (eg. the famous Chalaça, a life-long friend of Pedro I) but also how his mind was shaped since a little child and how he, despite being himself an authoritarian person, forged the basis for democracy and political stability in Brazil and Portugal.

The book is very well written and highly recommended to anyone who wish to understand the Brazilian and Portuguese history from Brazil's Independence (1822) to his death in 1834.

About the Author

MUKUL DEVA served as an infantry officer in the Indian Army for sixteen years, and for over a decade, was involved in active combat and counterterrorism operations in India and abroad. After retiring from the army, Deva established a security company that helps protect private organizations and individual in sixty Indian cities. Mukul Deva infuses his thriller “Weapon of Vengeance” with authenticity, gained from his experience as an Indian Army officer, an international counterterrorism agent, and a private security provider. He also fills the novel with emotional resonance that makes the characters memorable.
Ravinder Singh Gill, the head of the Indian Police Anti-Terrorism Task Force, already has his hands full because of the Commonwealth Games taking place in Delhi and the usual terrorist threats, some that have targeted him personally. Then the Indian Government springs a new challenge on him to be handled at the same time—providing security for a new Middle East peace conference.
The conference was spurred by a horrific multi-pronged terrorist attack that had recently shaken both Israelis and Palestinians. Rumors have surfaced that the attack was masterminded by a woman, but the Western Intelligence Agencies are unaware that she is one of their own—MI6 agent Ruby Gill, Ravinder’s lost daughter. When Ruby was three, her Palestinian mother had abandoned Ravinder to focus on fighting against Israel. After her mother is killed in protests against the Israelis, Ruby uses the skills she’s learn in preventing terrorism to raise the level of violence. Now, she’s on her way to Delhi to destroy the peace summit—and for a reunion with her father.
The reunion has a profound effect on Ruby, awakening feelings she thought she’d walled off. Ravinder is surprised but pleased when Ruby shows unannounced at his office, and takes her into the family he built after he lost Ruby’s mother. Slowly, though, his suspicions grow that the timing of Ruby’s arrival is not accidental.
Deva blends the family drama with the terrorist thriller seamlessly, giving the story a depth that’s unusual for the genre, and he handles the action scenes with the skill of Robert Ludlum. While “Weapon of Vengeance” is a slimmer volume than most thrillers, each of its 288 pages crackle with energy. After its original Indian publishing, now a wider audience can enjoy Deva’s superb thriller.

I enjoyed this novel, but it did take me a little while to fully immerse myself in the story. Once I overcome this I found it to be a really good, set in a completely unique location, which is different than the typical action/thriller novel.
