excellent acount on the history of Brazil/Portugal of the 1820's - 30's

This book is one of the first complete and an equilibrated account on the life of Dom Pedro, how he became Brazil's first Emperor and then abdicated to his son (later to become Dom Pedro II) and went back to Portugal to fight against his own brother. It covers not only his personal life and friendships (eg. the famous Chalaça, a life-long friend of Pedro I) but also how his mind was shaped since a little child and how he, despite being himself an authoritarian person, forged the basis for democracy and political stability in Brazil and Portugal.
The book is very well written and highly recommended to anyone who wish to understand the Brazilian and Portuguese history from Brazil's Independence (1822) to his death in 1834.
