After her adventures with the necromancer in Istanbul, Nadira, now a necromancer herself and the new High Priestess of Elysium, sets out on a journey with her companions to Persia to meet with a mysterious power that dwells in the mountains of Arborz. She intends to learn the secrets of Zoroaster and claim for herself the power over the realms of the dead. She and her companions meet up with the secret remnants of the Nizari Ismaili Assassins and the Sufi mystics who present Nadira with the Books of the Dead to take back to Eleusis. She hopes these books contain what she needs to be able to stop the European powers from igniting a new crusade to reclaim Istanbul and Jerusalem from the Turks. Nadira enlists the aid of the Turkish captain Kemal Reis and his nephew, Piri, on an adventure from the high mountains of Persia to the rough seas of the Mediterranean. The battle for the souls of Europe and Asia involve more than just priests and imams, kings and caliphs. To stop the slaughter, Nadira must use her power over minds and flesh as well as her quick thinking and courage to bring all the elements together to eradicate the idea of a holy crusade from the minds of the powerful men who rule their world. Her abilities grow with practice and experience, but what she learns muddies the distinction between good and evil. As she becomes more powerful, she begins to lose what it means to be human and starts to take on the guise of a goddess. Her companions wonder if she is becoming an angel of mercy, or a frightening reaper of souls.

About the Author
Annmarie Banks spent the first twenty years of her professional life as a bookseller specializing in out-of-print and antiquarian books. She currently resides in the state of Arizona. She has been writing since elementary school when she wrote her first book, “The Kitty Cat Got Lost”— stapled binding, pastel construction paper, illustrated by the author, very good condition. One copy extant. Since then she has studied many books about the history of the quest for knowledge, namely alchemy and philosophy. This search for the unknown was so fascinating to her that she wrote the book she had always hoped to find on the shelves of the bookstore, but never did. Arthur C. Clark’s Third Law, “Any significantly advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” is the inspiration for her series of books exploring the boundaries between what is possible, what is plausible and what remains to be proven. What were those alchemists really doing in those locked towers?

Sit down. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

It's difficult to enumerate everything I loved about this novel without giving away key plot points, and as someone who tries to avoid reading "spoilers," I will attempt to avoid spilling the beans. I will assume, however, that if you are reading this, you have read the two previous novels in the series.
Nadira's journey continues in Books of the Dead right where it left off. She's gained new powers, but also new perspectives, having defeated the Necromancer and lost her lover. What makes Nadira such an engaing character continues to be her complexity. Unlike many of the heroines of today's fiction, she is very multidimensional. Despite having gained semi-omnipotence, Nadira continues to struggle with life lessons that we all face at one point or another. She has difficulty coming to terms with her own grief over the loss of Baron Montrose and pursues his reincarnation (so to speak) with a single-mindedness that ironically leaves her blind to other Truths. She has to learn to manage her anger without harming those around her - indeed, without harming even those who are physically distant from her, given the scope of her powers! The amazing thing about Banks' writing is that she is able to convey a character so powerful, yet so relatable. Nadira may be many things, but a Mary Sue she is not.
Nadira, however, is not the only one to have an interesting character arch. Banks gives much attention to her side characters, the detail she pays to developing them lending a realism that so many other stories are lacking. My particular favorite throughout the series has been Brother William, who, in Books of the Dead, has progressed from the unstable young scholar to a delightfully snarky apprentice to Nadira. His dialogue is witty and urbane, providing the reader with actual laugh out loud moments and alternate insights into some of the situations which Nadira faces.
Without going into too much detail, I will say there are a couple of scenes set at sea, the detail of which blew my mind. Banks obviously did exhaustive research on the subject, allowing the reader to truly feel present on the deck of the ship.
My absolute favorite scene, however, involved Nadira demonstrating to her companions how even "non-living" beings have life and can be compelled to change their form. She subsequently persuades a happy little rock that it has completed its good rock work and it is time for it to move on to its next challenge - as lightening. The scene was simple, but effective. Not only did it impress upon her companions the Truth of her words, but it delivered those wonderful warm, fuzzy feelings.
The series is an enjoyable tale. It challenges the reader and makes her think. The really pleasant thing about the series as a whole though is that Banks assumes a certain level of intelligence from her readers; though she discusses some intriguing philosophical concepts, she does not dumb anything down. Order a copy of the series today. Sit down. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

Very enjoyable finish to the series

The term "books of the dead" refers to books written to describe what happens to a person after they die. Most cultures, going back to antiquity, have texts expressing their beliefs on this subject. In other words, they are attempting to describe what we would call "heaven". How we get there, who we meet when we get there, and what existence is like in that spiritual place. The author's research, and obvious personal out-of-body experiences have been combined to produce this remarkable series of books. In this, the third volume, we follow Nadira' s trials to the completion of her journey to enlightenment. What a rousing tale it has been!
Nadira has gone through a lot (see previous two volumes) to get here. Her awareness, her knowledge, her learning what can be done, and what must not be done has all been chronicled in this series. Her psychic powers are great, but she struggles with how best to use what is available to her and what her limitations are. In this book she finds answers to these issues. She goes toe to toe with a God. Both of them learn something from that experience (the God is Ahura Mazda, an actual earth God, who is still being worshipped in some parts of the world).
She creates through thought alone enough food to feed an entire villiage, but struggles with what the long term consequences could be if she continued along that track. She tries to stop an impending war, but runs headlong into the intense psychic power of anger and the strong righteous beliefs of men bent on war. Disillusioned by her failures to accomplish what she intended, she nearly commits suicide, but is brought up short by the need to save her friends who are in deep trouble trying to keep up with her.
Escaping in a remarkable fashion with her friends by ship, she runs directly into a major naval battle being conducted by her new husband, an admiral in the Turkish fleet. (The author describes 15th century naval battles accurately, she has done her homework!) Her husband is victorious, but wounded, and she must save his life using her unusual abilities. But in a following scene, one of her friends has committed an unpardonable sin, and must die for it. She "helps him" find his way to his heaven and his God, much to the chagrin of her remaining friends.
With enough philosophy to encourage the reader to think, and enough action to keep the reader from being bored, this is a fascinating story that is very pleasant to read and hard to put down. You are not going to find a series of books like this anywhere else! What a marvel! As you can tell, I was very impressed with this book, and it is highly recommended. Namaste!
