The fierce courage of the men and women of the Greek Resistance is brought to vivid life in Sunday Times best seller Simon Scarrow's powerful new novel of World War II.
1938: A perfect summer on the Greek island of Lefkas for three young people untroubled by the simmering politics of Europe. By Sally Coles
When Anna, a history teacher, is contacted out of the blue by a German archaeology student, Dieter, she has no idea of the stories of her grandmother that will be unearthed.
Dieters father Peter and grandfather spent time on an archaeological dig on the island of Lefkas in 1938 and while there became friends with two Greek teenagers Eleni and Andreas. On the verge of some great discoveries they were recalled to Germany because of the political situation in Europe but vowed to meet up again.
Five years later however Peter does return to Greece but on the opposite side to his two former friends and now a highly trained German soldier - can the friendship withstand this test?
The story is mainly told through Eleni's memories to Anna who previously knew nothing of her grandmother's exploits during the war and for fans of historical novels is definitely worth reading

Good background tends to weigh down slow pace of narrative
By keetmom
Simon Scarrow certainly did his homework for "Hearts of Stone" and the detailed research, both in terms of the archeological work on a Greek island before WWII and the horrors of occupation during the war is impressive. His clever plot which weaves together parallel narratives of different families linked to these events is also effective. Overall however, he takes his time getting through all the elements he wants to describe in the major events so that by the time he gets to the long awaited denouement, it has lost much of its impact.

Enjoyable
By Rena Lyons
Having lived in Greece for over 50 years and being fluent in Greek as well as well-read in recent Greek History, I found that some of the surnames used by the author were not typically greek. This also was true about some of the addressing of the greek resistance leaders. In reality they had taken names such as "kapetan Zervas" and "kapetan Nikiforos" but when one addressed them it is declined to "kapetanie" and the plural was "kapetanii". Silly things that marred my enjoyment of the tale, which otherwise was quite good fun and historically well researched. The author captured brilliantly some of the good and not so good characteristics of Greeks. Namely their valour and patriotism, but also their petty squabbling among themselves for hierarchy and recognition, often to the detriment of a higher cause.
