This is hands down the best introductory Calculus of Variations on the market and I have seen them all, Professor Wan covers all the standard faire (in under 650 pages to boot) on first order necessary conditions as well as second order sufficiency conditions, weak and strong variations, piecewise smooth solutions, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian Mechanics, applications to Elasticity and Fluid Mechanics, Optimal Control, and Dynamic Programming. This book is worth its weight in gold to the aspiring applied mathematician. My highest recommendation !
