A Matter of Time Story

Life has never been easy for Duncan Stiel. His childhood was the stuff of nightmares, and his day job as an undercover police officer forces him to hide his true self and occasionally lands him in the hospital. So when he finally meets the perfect man, it comes as no surprise that everything falls apart around him. What Duncan doesn’t expect is that the hardest hurdle to get over before he can make a life with Aaron Sutter is the one inside himself.

Everyone thinks Aaron has it all—looks, money, fame, and success beyond measure. Everyone, that is, except Aaron. At the end of the day, the cameras stop flashing, friends go back to their own lives, company business is handled, and Aaron is always alone. The moment he meets Duncan Stiel, Aaron knows he’ll do anything to hold onto the larger-than-life detective. But when he realizes money won’t buy him the ultimate happiness, Aaron needs to find the strength to give Duncan something much more important—his heart.

Mostly Boring Until the Middle. Long wait for it to get Interesting.
By Sassy
I saw this book and jumped to buy it. I was soooooooooo looking forward to learning more about Sam and Jory and their group of friends and family. Well, that doesn't happen. The book is about Duncan and Aaron Sutter.

And, it's Boring

There really is no character development for Duncan. There is no true description of how he looks or who he is. He has friends who pop in and out but you get no sense of them and thus no sense of him. Unlike the other A Matter of Time, there is no real reason to care for this character. There is no development of the character or the relationship.

As to the "relationship" b/t Duncan and Aaaron, it's almost like the paranormal MINE syndrome.

There is a lot of sex, especially in the beginning as if the sex act is enough to cause two independent, closeted men to want to be with each other forever, especially the Aaron Sutter from the prior novels.

Mostly I skipped a lot b/c it was just boring. The sex was not enough to build or hold up the story. All the police procedural stuff, boring.

And there is a whole new family for Aaron, a homophobic one at that. And suddenly Aaron Sutter is in the closet and afraid to be revealed as gay. The author must have forgotten that long relationship he had with Jory, his visiting gay night clubs and his living with the Jory clone guy . . . out and proud. He travelled with a gay lover. He travelled with an entourage who knew he was gay. He LOUDLY talk about wanting Jory and wants Jory to move in with him! She must have forgotten all the gay sex Aaron had gotten up to, including all those orgies. The Aaron Sutter from the prior books would not be intimidated by a father's so-called homophobia. But the author ignores all that. Aaron Sutter is now in the closet and afraid to lose his company. Ugh! She changed who he is, his background, in order to write this story.

And Duncan is not supposed to be out. Yet, his partner knows and the coroner knows and a host of other people know. His whole thing was that he wanted to stay in the closet b/c he wanted to be promoted. That changes for whatever reason. I don't know if Aaron is the cause or not.

Mostly, I was bored. I kept reading hoping the author would do something with the characters to make them interesting like Jory or Sam. But there was just nothing there.

The first person narrative doesn't work here b/c Duncan has no personality. He says things "like I was tortured. I didn't scream. They broke my arm." It's just so dry. Him being stoic does not play well for the first person voice.

I enjoyed the book better when the stopped the police procedural stuff and the characters could play off each other, which is why my review is 3 stars and not 2. The middle part wasn't so dry. It's not even close to the prior Matter of Time. They have no lively character like Jory. And no interesting, struggling man like Sam. These two characters, Duncan and Aaron, don't talk to each other. They talk AT each other and they both decided to come out of the closet without reasons articulated, in their own heads or together. For the Duncan that the author portrayed previously, it was just sloppy.

We saw all of the struggling emotion b/t Sam and Jory, individually and as a couple. Here, we don't really see anything. Conclusions are announced. And to distract from the lack of heart, the author goes into GREAT detail about cases.

I was severely disappointed.

I've enjoyed Mary Calmes books in the past, but her recent ones have just been disappointing. This may be my last Calmes book b/c this book almost ruins the pleasure I got from all the prior A Matter of Time books.

I waited so long....and I was so disappointed.
By Lizzyb
I waited so long to finally hear Aaron's story and I was so disappointed in the outcome. Through all the Matter of Time stories Aaron was always my favorite character. Even when he was a jerk, he was just so likable. I didn't really like him in this story. And that made me so very sad. His character seemed very out of line with how he was in all the previous installments. I found the same to be true of Duncan. His character didn't match up at all to what you saw of him in Acrobat. He all of a sudden became silly, goofy, and incredibly open. I just didn't buy it.
I also found it pretty boring. There's a plot there, but nothing really happens. Which is amazing because really the plot is pretty complicated. I don't know, it was just a let down all the way around. I don't think I'll read it again.

Not my favorite book of the series
By Gina
I love the Matter Of Time series but Parting Shot is my least favorite book in the series. I am glad Aaron and Duncan found each other but I am disappointed Sam and Jory are just mentioned except for a short appearance by Sam.
