About the Author
Tony Robles was born and raised in San Francisco. He is the author of two children's books, Lakas and the Manilatown Fish and Lakas and the Makibaka Hotel, written for his son, Lakas. He is co-editor and a revolutionary worker scholar of Poor magazine. In 2010 he was nominated for the Pushcart Prize by Mythium Literary Journal for his short story, "In My Country." Robles is also a housing rights advocate and board member of the Manilatown Heritage Foundation. He currently lives in Oakland with his wife Tiny and his son Tibu.

SF Poet of the Real

Robles' poetry is both sublime and real. I used to run into him and his uncle, the "Filipino Poet Laureate of San Francisco," Al Robles, on the bus. That's the kind of poet Tony is. A poet of the people, like his uncle, he observes and turns a beautiful phrase into a heartbreak of recognition. He knows the streets of San Francisco; he knows the souls of poetry living in each of the old and broken bodies blithely ignored by hipster tourists rampaging like hungry locusts. His poems make you feel human.

Like everything that Tony Robles has written, this was a very good book. And, if you are a mother or father or schoolteacher, you should get his book, "Tony Gonzales, Great American."
