About the Author
Bob Gardner is a long-admired member of the aviation community. He began his flying career as a hobby in Alaska in 1960 while in the U.S. Coast Guard. By 1966, Bob earned his Private land and sea, Commercial, Instrument, Instructor, CFII, and MEL. Over the next 16 years he was an instructor, charter pilot, corporate and freight Captain, and Director of ASA Ground Schools.

Currently, Bob holds an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate with single and multi-engine land ratings; a CFI certificate with instrument and multi-engine land ratings; and a Ground Instructor's Certificate with advanced and instrument ratings. In addition, Bob is a Gold Seal Instructor and has been instructing since 1968. To top off this impressive list of accomplishments, Bob is also a well-known author, journalist, and airshow lecturer.

Offers a lot of help for the student pilot.

This is a great book. It's full of information on flight communications. Basic and professionally, it covers it all. Love how it's easy to read and easier to understand. Nothing beats the real thing, but this really gets you ready for that. A must buy for the student pilot.

Good essential book

This book covers most communication scenarios between ATC and Private pilots. It gives useful examples for common dialogs and helps pilots expect ATC responses. I think overall a good read with positive results on radio communication skills and confidence. This book also covers IFR dialogs during approaches.

Essential for a student pilot

This is an excellent resource for student pilots like myself that are not necessarily having trouble knowing what to say to ATC, rather, what kind of reply to expect from ATC.

Even if you are nearing the end of pilot training, buy this book, read the chapters covering the class of airspace that you most frequently fly in, and reap the benefits of feeling more comfortable on the radio.

The radio is a world of its own, and is a big one too. You can't study about it enough.

A pedagogically superb textbook

This text is unique in that it provides a rigorous introduction to quantum field theory in a way that is extremely scrupulous to make the instruction as straightforward and painless as possible. It would be suitable for an upper-level undergraduate course or a first graduate course in QFT. The author does a nice job of explaining the logic of second quantization and the difference between quantum field theory and relativistic quantum mechanics. The presentation of the Schrodinger, Heisenberg and Interaction pictures and their interrelations is very well done. I found his introduction to Feynman diagrams to be outstanding--the transition from the detailed mathematical derivations to the diagrams themselves is the clearest I have seen in any QFT text available today. Also the discussion of renormalization is first-class. His treatment follows the traditional approach, leaving the development of path-integrals to more advanced texts, although his addendum on Path Integrals is a very nice introduction to the subject. All-in-all this is a very fine introduction to QFT and, as a physics professor myself, I recommend it highly both for formal courses and for self-study.

This book is perfect for getting started with QFT!

While (many or most?) other books have a daunting “mathematical compression factor“ this book presents the theory ground up with each and every step in computations.
You won't see “a short computation shows“, or “one sees immediately“ etc.

In order to not get lost in details the author helps with frequent “big pictures“, “wholeness charts“, margin notes and summaries so the reader is always aware of the story line.
Basic material that the reader should know (but often fails to recollect in the proper way) is presented in boxes when needed.
In total this book is so comprehensive and understandable that it is even perfectly suited for self-study (that's what I did after being out of physics for years).

This book is what you need for getting a sound foundation for studying advanced topics in QFT.

Finally a REAL Introduction

I posted this review on the previous edition of the book:

After attempting to learn from several QFT textbooks, I came to realize that there were innumerable occasions when the authors seemed to gloss-over completely new/unfamiliar concepts because they apparently regarded them as "trivial" or "obvious." But what seemed trivial to them often left me scratching my head, trying to logically tie one equation to the next and arrive at their conclusion. Most books also tend to omit tedious, yet fundamental, calculations that would be a real pain for a new student to try to work out.

I started with the classics ("Peskin and Schroeder," "Bjorken and Drell"), but they seemed to almost require previous knowledge of QFT to make any sense of them, as if they were intended more as an encyclopedia than an introduction to a new subject. I tried Zee's book next, but realized that his unconventional approach (teaching the path integral formulation before the canonical formulation) made it very hard to simultaneously learn from other texts. He also tends to be sloppy with his math, and often left me more confused than anything. The closest I got to a good introduction was Srednicki's book, but it too was hard to follow at times.

By chance I stumbled across Klauber's website and read the first chapter of his book, expecting to be left confused as usual. To the contrary, what I had been struggling to understand for months suddenly snapped into place. I immediately read the rest of the free chapters, and when I finished those I ordered the book as soon as it appeared on amazon.

I've heard it said a dozen or so times that QFT has an extremely steep learning curve, even after coming out of a QM course, and that it often requires the simultaneous use of many different textbooks. It appears as if this is no longer the case, because Klauber has achieved what others apparently couldn't: a REAL introductory text that doesn't leave large and confusing gaps.

About the Author

Dr Marinella Marmo is Associate Professor in Criminal Justice at Flinders University Law School. Marinella researches in the areas of international criminal justice and transnational crime. Currently, she works in the area of migration, border control and human mobility. She has co-authored the books Crime, Justice and Human Rights (with Leanne Weber, Elaine Fishwick) and Race, Gender and the Body in British Migration Control (with Evan Smith) and co-edited a number of books. Her research has been widely cited in numerous newspapers, including The Guardian and The New York Times. She is the recipient of an Office for Learning and Teaching Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning by the Australian Federal Government.

 

Dr Nerida Chazal is a Lecturer in Criminology at Flinders University, Australia. Her research examines the aims and functioning of international criminal justice in a complex and increasingly global world. In particular, she researches the International Criminal Court and state crime. She is author of The International Criminal Court and Global Social Control (Routledge, 2015) and co-editor (with W. De Lint and M. Marmo) of Criminal Justice in International Society (Routledge, 2014).

In My Top Ten!

All of us have a mental Top Ten List - those books we remember and reread, and recommend to others with enthusiasm. BLUE WILLOW is one of mine, and also has the distinction of being one of the few novels I have bought and given as a gift to others. BLUE WILLOW was my first Deborah Smith novel, bought on an impulse, and I was literally blown away by how well it was crafted. Unlike other novels, where there may be two or three fully developed characters, and the remainder serve as foils or window dressings for the protagonists, Deborah Smith manages to infuse the characters of two entire families with depth, painting a picture of people with both nobility and tragic flaws. The intimacy of the central characters is well written, physically sexual but emotionally deep. As an aside, Ms. Smith shows, in the setting of her novel and much of the narrative, a gift for researching the backround into which she will write (I learned more about ceramics than I ever knew there was to know!), and a talent for drawing pictures with words that enthralled me. I sound embarrassingly gushing, I know, but this tale is so human and so easy to identify with - loving, losing, travelling a long, painful, and lonely road, and coming full circle again. How many of us wouldn't wish for a second chance with a first love? Buy this book, and don't rush through it.

The problem I had with this book....

As other people have already mentioned in thier summaries, the book starts with a childhood infatuation that then survives the h and H adult years. Overall I thought the story was fine but I have an issue with weak h and I really did not like how this h seemed to be used as the H's family punching bag the entire book. The H constantly chooses his family needs over the h and the only support he ever really offers her throughout the entire book is financially which really isn't much of a sacrifice to him since he is extreamly wealthy himself. I was very unimpressed by how easily the H chooses to marry another woman and then when the family begins to gang up on the h, the H never really defends her in front of the them. There was a point to where the H slaps the h, then later in the book the H's sister slaps the h in front of the H and the H does nothing other than separate the sister and glare. I just don't understand how more people were not bothered by the physical and verbal humiliation that the family put the h through. Even towards the end of the book where the h puts herself out there again in an attempt to help the H family, the H AGAIN chooses to side with his family and threatens to physically remove her from his house. That was the last straw for me and the h of course was ok with it, afterall he had always done that and will continue to do that. The couple of times in the end of the book where he actually started to back the h up were just too little too late for me, I had lost all respect for the H by then. The H's priority was simply not the h. It is hard to pull off a romance novel when the H always puts his finances, his family and everything else before the h. Even worse is the fact that he doesn't acknowledge his lack of priority where the h is concern or the fact that he and his family have a lot of making amends that need to be done. So if you just want to read a story then I would say that this one is ok but the romance between the H and the h left me wanting. I think I would give this book 2 and a half stars overall because of it.

Only the lucky

Carol Ann Duffy has the dubious distinction of being well-enough regarded, now, that former students who were CRUELLY FORCED into reading her poems will go flocking to the internet to air their wrongs. And here we are! There are four reviews from the same person who has apparently never learned how to single-click the 'submit form' button. This is not fair.

In reply:

It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love."

And more like it. If that's something that grabs you by the throat and hurls you to the ground--well--that's lucky, and your life is richer for it. If it doesn't--alas!

My Study of 'Mean Time'

Let me begin by saying that Carol Ann Duffy is a poetic genius. She stands alone in the world of poetry with an extreme confidence to tackle taboo subjects such as sex and disease etc. which other poets wouldn't dare speak about. For example; in `Litany' Duffy speaks of subjects that others don't tend to speak of in standard, conventional poems.
"where no one has cancer, or sex, or debts, and certainly not leukaemia , which no one could spell"
Some people may assume that Duffy's work represents the pessimistic views of today's society, but in my opinion, the way you interpret the poets is a personal touch to the understanding of the poems. Duffy has an extreme talent for stimulating the imagination and creativity of her audiences.
`Mean Time' reflects life experiences by Duffy herself which she interpreted and condensed into an anthology of profound poems. My personal favourite from `Mean Time' is `Welltread' as it represents schools in a stereotypical way. For example; in every school there is always one teacher that purposely attempts to intimidate his students, the one person everyone is scared of. This poem also portrays how small situations, when you are young can stay with you for the rest of your life.
"Still smoudlering"
This anthology is for you if you enjoy reading poems that are profound and have meaning. Carol Ann Duffy does not specialise in romanticism like many other conventional poets, but down-to-earth, realistic situations, which everyone can relate to in some shape or form.
I honestly enjoyed analysing this anthology of poems for my English literature A-level, but if I weren't specialising in English, I would've read `Mean Time' for pleasure anyway.
This anthology truly reflects Carol Ann Duffy's best work, and is well worth the time and money.

I couldn't put the book down! The information in this book is well researched; you can verify the book's contents by the click of a mouse. Although this book is written by a die-hard researcher his phraseology makes the book an easy read. He gets right to the facts w/o out carelessly wasting paper and ink to prove his case. Lee Cummings closes the coffin in this volume, believe that! He accomplishes what he set out to do & that is proving Hebrew History w/o using the "Hebrew's Book" (i.e. the Scriptures) as primary source. The BEST obstetrical book EVER!

I used this book in the 1990's during nurse midwifery school and it was my favorite text. As an author and professor, I could no longer use the book as it had not been republished for some time. I was beyond thrilled when I saw it was updated. I was not disappointed! This is what I personally consider the "Bible of Obstetrics". It is concise, extremely readable, and includes crucial content without erroneous information and fluff. The new colored drawings are beautiful and the content is well laid out. They include statistical information and precise headings that make looking up content fast and easy. I have an extensive library of obstetrical textbooks and need to purchase the most current versions for textbook writing purposes; however, this is really the ONLY book you need. I often give students a short list of books I would take if I was on a deserted island and needed references to look up information. This is #1 on my list! Great revision!!

Packed full of easy to read information

This book is a great supplement to Varney's. Oxorn-Foote has great, easily legible, full-color illustrations (though I do question proportions in them sometimes) of many obstetric variations and complications. The layout of the book, with bold heading graphics and colored margin tabs, makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I also enjoy the writing style. To wit, this on shoulder dystocia:

"Usually equanimity forsakes the attendants. They push, they pull. Alarm increases. Eventually by greater strength of muscle or by some infernal juggle the difficulty appears to be overcome, and the shoulders and trunk of a goodly child are delivered."

My only beef with the book is that it is very much old-school OB about presenting all graphics as if the woman is in lithotomy. If you want to visualize side-lying or hands and knees though, just flip the book around. Oh, and it doesn't mention the Gaskin maneuver by name, merely calling it "all fours."

I'm a doula and pre-nursing student, and as I attend births I often leave with questions. I got an inexpensive used copy of this book as a way to become more familiar with the medical side of labor and birth, and it more than does the job. It's overkill for someone in my position, and yet absolutely fascinating and informative. In depth anatomy, physiology and practical medical information about labor and birth is presented in a concise, understandable, and thoroughly illustrated format.

I don't expect to ever read it straight through (unless it is required reading in school somewhere down the line) and the practical advice isn't anything I am in the position to use, but it's an interesting addition to my reference bookshelf as I try to sort out and understand for myself the medical side of what I see/hear at births.

For many years, the fields of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), Conduct Disorder (CD) and aggressive and antisocial behaviour, have been researched independently of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and hyperactive, impulsive and inattentive behaviour. In reality, they often occur simultaneously, and their separation has led to a hampering of our understanding of the two groups. However, the last decade has seen an integration of the research fields, essential for an accurate understanding of these disorders, and information on this topic has grown rapidly.

Focusing on children aged 3 to 14 years, this book offers a concise and comprehensive overview of empirical knowledge and associated clinical information on ODD and CD; it does so with respect to aetiology, assessment and treatment, and to neurobiological factors in these disorders. In reviewing the literature, the authors pay particular attention to recently published studies and meta-analyses, without neglecting older high quality studies.

Written as a guide for professionals, this book is useful as a succinct overview of the field for both students and researchers; it is also of value to advanced researchers, offering essential information on topics which may not be their primary focus of interest and expertise.

About the Author
Walter Matthys is Professor of Aggression in Children at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, and a clinical psychiatrist at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, University Medical Centre, Utrecht. His research at the Rudolf Magnus Institute of Neuroscience focuses on neurobiological and psychological characteristics in children and adolescents with disruptive behaviour disorders, and the interventions to prevent and treat these disorders.

John E. Lochman is Professor and Doddridge Saxon Chairholder in Clinical Psychology at The University of Alabama, where he also directs the Center for Prevention of Youth Behavior Problems. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, serves on the Board for Society for Prevention Research, and is President of the American Board for Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. His research interests are centred on risk factors, social cognition, and intervention and prevention with aggressive children.

Yet financial difficulties and her own budding attraction to Rafe drive her to accept his proposal.

Neither expects passion to fire up their marriage. Neither expects that surprising passion to last. Maggie’s confrontation with Rafe’s mistress is the first blow. The second comes with Rafe’s suspicions that the rake has lured Maggie back into his bed with protestations of a resumed love.

Falling in love with his employer’s daughter Connie was not Roger Denby’s biggest mistake. No, that mistake was giving her a taste of passion. When he rejected Connie, he then had to watch her pursue a gentleman who might be charming her into a snare. Did Roger drive her into that relationship by awakening her desires? All he knows is that he still yearns for Connie. How can he prevent her from ruining herself?

Connie Lockhart knew the walls between her and Roger Denby: She was not yet eighteen. She was the boss’s daughter. She was as far out of his reach as marriage into nobility was out of hers. She thought those walls had tumbled down when he kissed her. Yet he rebuilt them even higher than before and returned to being only her watchdog. Believing their relationship hopeless, Connie pursues a titled gentleman who is no longer out of her reach since her father’s marriage to an earl’s widow. And revenge on the snobbish society darlings seems especially sweet.

Richard Malbury flatters Connie. He seems charmed by her. Marriage to him is preferable to a fruitless love of Roger.

And then Rafe is suspected of murdering a valuable employee, and this Game of Hearts turns more dangerous than Rafe & Maggie and Roger & Connie could have anticipated.

Great Regency read.

This was a wonderful conclusion to this triology. Excellent character development, interesting plot and descriptions which place you in the setting. Could have never guessed the conclusion. While this is the third in a triology, this is also a stand alone novel. It is not necessary to read the previous two books, but it was nice to know the back story. Will be looking for more offerings from this author.
