In My Top Ten!

All of us have a mental Top Ten List - those books we remember and reread, and recommend to others with enthusiasm. BLUE WILLOW is one of mine, and also has the distinction of being one of the few novels I have bought and given as a gift to others. BLUE WILLOW was my first Deborah Smith novel, bought on an impulse, and I was literally blown away by how well it was crafted. Unlike other novels, where there may be two or three fully developed characters, and the remainder serve as foils or window dressings for the protagonists, Deborah Smith manages to infuse the characters of two entire families with depth, painting a picture of people with both nobility and tragic flaws. The intimacy of the central characters is well written, physically sexual but emotionally deep. As an aside, Ms. Smith shows, in the setting of her novel and much of the narrative, a gift for researching the backround into which she will write (I learned more about ceramics than I ever knew there was to know!), and a talent for drawing pictures with words that enthralled me. I sound embarrassingly gushing, I know, but this tale is so human and so easy to identify with - loving, losing, travelling a long, painful, and lonely road, and coming full circle again. How many of us wouldn't wish for a second chance with a first love? Buy this book, and don't rush through it.

The problem I had with this book....

As other people have already mentioned in thier summaries, the book starts with a childhood infatuation that then survives the h and H adult years. Overall I thought the story was fine but I have an issue with weak h and I really did not like how this h seemed to be used as the H's family punching bag the entire book. The H constantly chooses his family needs over the h and the only support he ever really offers her throughout the entire book is financially which really isn't much of a sacrifice to him since he is extreamly wealthy himself. I was very unimpressed by how easily the H chooses to marry another woman and then when the family begins to gang up on the h, the H never really defends her in front of the them. There was a point to where the H slaps the h, then later in the book the H's sister slaps the h in front of the H and the H does nothing other than separate the sister and glare. I just don't understand how more people were not bothered by the physical and verbal humiliation that the family put the h through. Even towards the end of the book where the h puts herself out there again in an attempt to help the H family, the H AGAIN chooses to side with his family and threatens to physically remove her from his house. That was the last straw for me and the h of course was ok with it, afterall he had always done that and will continue to do that. The couple of times in the end of the book where he actually started to back the h up were just too little too late for me, I had lost all respect for the H by then. The H's priority was simply not the h. It is hard to pull off a romance novel when the H always puts his finances, his family and everything else before the h. Even worse is the fact that he doesn't acknowledge his lack of priority where the h is concern or the fact that he and his family have a lot of making amends that need to be done. So if you just want to read a story then I would say that this one is ok but the romance between the H and the h left me wanting. I think I would give this book 2 and a half stars overall because of it.
