May, a foremost authority on the genre, contributes a major effort to examine the history and characteristics of the short story from a critical perspective. Drawing on twenty-five years' experience studying the form, May argues that the development of the short story has always reflected "a tension between the traditional mythic origins of the form and the increasing pressures of modernism to depict 'real life.'" The book commences with an incisive overview, tracing how the conventions of the short story have evolved over time, from the form's origins in myth and folktale through its immersions into romanticism, realism, formalism, and, in the contemporary renaissance, the twin streams of magical realism and hyperrealism. In four core chapters May charts the major periods in the genre's development, along the way delving into the stories of a host of representative writers - among them Hawthorne, Poe, Conrad, Chekhov, Hemingway, Porter, Barthelme, and Carver - and offering close readings that entertain as they inform. One of the best scholars on short story theory

This is not the first time I read Charles E. May. I had read two other articles from "The New Short Story Theories", edited by himself: "The Nature of Knowledge in Short Fiction" and "Chekhov and the Modern Short Story". Both articles and this book I've just bought are being very useful and helpful in the writings of my master's degree thesis on "The genre problem and the short-short story". Charles E. May is a great scholar on short story theory. He goes deep but is very clear in what he writes. I am very thankful to him.

Falling For A Stranger

Drew Callaway, Navy helicopter pilot, heads to Isla de los Suenos; "Island of Dreams". He meets Ria, the beautiful bartender, at the resort he is staying at before returning to San Francisco. They spend a wonderful romantic night together. The next morning, he sees the boat Ria is on explode. When he gets home, Drew joins the Coast Guard to fly helicopters for search and rescue. A year and half later, he spots a woman who looks like Ria. The mystery must be solved. An explanation is not forthcoming. Ria and Megan have completely entwined Drew into their lives. This book is a must read - every page will bring you closer to the amazing finale. Sit back and enjoy.

I love when a book is so good that you don't want it to end. Then you discover there is a sequel and the drama continues with the same characters. This is what Barbara Freethy does so well. Great read!

Best of adventure, mystery, intrigue and love.

Always love a story that draws you in right at the start and grabs your attention so you will not want to put it down until the very end.

This series of the Callaway family shows the strength of each member as individuals and their close bonds as family.

This is the story of Drew, the middle sibling. After service in the Navy with tours in the war zone of present day middle east ,he has seen it all ,and needs a change but still wants to serve. He joins the Coast Guard. Before reporting for duty he goes on a trip to an island with a fellow pilot. Then the adventure begins.

He meets a woman and falls hard. The next day when he tries to see her to say good bye, there is a tragic accident that changes his life. The story takes off from here and keeps getting better

The ensuing twists and turns are integrated with great care to make you keep reading as only Barbara Freethy can weave the story.

techniques includes fundamental theoretical backgrounds, but

information that can be obtained by use of archaeometry.
The book’s 20 chapters are divided into three parts. Part
one covers the most commonly used analytical techniques;
part two deals with composition, analytical methods, and
degradation of materials; and part three discusses some
emerging archaeometric themes. The book gives good
guidelines on how to select the most appropriate techniques,
and covers non-destructive and micro-destructive techniques
Contents Chapters 1–7 cover the imaging techniques
that are the basis of common non-destructive scientific
visualisation: vibrational spectroscopy; X-ray methods,
including instrumentation and archaeometry applications;
radiocarbon dating; separation techniques, mostly interfaced
with mass spectrometry to identify organic substances; mass
spectrometry, focusing on element identification and isotope
determination; and electrochemical techniques (useful to
obtain information about composition and origin).
Chapters 8–17 describe the composition and ageing
behaviour of several materials encountered in art and
archaeology. Pottery, glass, and obsidian artefacts are critically
reviewed, covering the most recent literature. Advanced
instrumental techniques used to characterise enamelled
metalwork and gemstones (not commonly discussed in the
literature) reveal new possibilities for investigating these
materials. A survey of pigments and dyes in history emphasizes
the importance of colours and the complexity of their chemical
composition. The chapter on the structures and materials of
panel and canvas paintings summarises how to characterise
both artists’ materials and those used for restoration. Chapter
14 provides information enabling better understanding of the
rates and mechanisms of corrosion of ferrous metals under
different environmental conditions. Resin and fossil resins
are briefly discussed in Chapter 15, and innovative analytical
procedures for identifying archaeological ivory are detailed.
Historical textiles are taken into account, but only in description
of a case study (a 17th-century bodice).
Chapters 18 and 19 report recent developments in the
authentication of art and archaeological objects and of
gemstones, and give insights into the production of the
decorative tiles used in Iranian architecture. The closing
chapter deals with an intriguing topic related to chemical

Professor Howell GM Edwards has published over 430 research papers in Raman spectroscopy and is on the Editorial Advisory Boards of the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy, Spectrochimica Acta: Biomolecular Spectroscopy, the Internet Journal of Vibrational Spectroscopy and the Asian Journal of Spectroscopy. He has supervised 40 research students for Ph.D degrees. Currently, he has research collaborations with groups in Spain, France, Denmark, Germany, Australia, Brazil and the USA. He has lectured widely on Raman spectroscopy and its applications including Plenary and Invited Lectures in Brazil, Australia, Finland, Denmark, Spain, France, South Africa, U.S.A and Germany. A useful book to read.

I am both an atheist and a regular follower of the author's blog the "Friendly Atheist", so I eagerly purchased this book when I first learnt of its publication, and I was not disappointed.

In a fast moving and well written manner the book discusses the problems, and solutions to these problems, encountered by young American atheists in the public school system. These problems centre around discrimination by their religious school mates, and school officials. One telling example from the book was a pastor who asked his students to draw a picture of both a christian and an atheist. The students drew the christian as a happy and good man, while the atheist was depicted as a drinker, a smoker, and a bad person.

In response to this, and more generally, to meet like minded people and to discuss issues, atheist students are now forming atheist clubs across the USA. It would be warming to be able to say that school teachers and administrators unreservedly performed their job and duty and helped and encouraged these students to do so, but this is not the case. Atheist students were confronted with opposition and outright vilification by their teachers and their school bureaucracy. More so, from their fellow students and parents, some students received physical threats. No sign of "love thy neighbour". In response many students successfully called upon the USA constitution, which separates church from state, in a bid for equal recognition and acceptance.

In the USA, it is illegal for public schools to promote religion, and schools must deal equally with students of all and no faiths. More so, atheist clubs are legal entities, and must be granted the same rights and privileges as other student groups. Interestingly, students can legally chose to remain seated and not recite the oath of allegiance, as it refers to god.

The book concentrates on examples from the lives of the students concerned. Interwoven with this is the wider world, parents (there's and others), the media, lawyers, the school, the community, priests and pastors, and how these affected the struggle by the student's to form their own groups and participate in their school life. It is very sad to say that some parents disowned their children when their atheism was revealed. Happily, the book does conclude with a realistic and optimistic view of the future.

The book is both a summary of the situation to date, and a primer on how to form and foster an atheist group at school. It contains examples, contact details, and text that will help any student interested in pursuing this worthy goal.

If you are a student, the parent of a student, either in or not in the USA, or you work or have dealings with a school or students, or if you have an interest in human rights, then read this book.

A much-needed and very readable book

This book, written by a high school teacher, explores difficulties experienced by high school students who do not believe in any god or who are wrestling with that issue. It is a very valuable guide for them, for their peers, for teachers, for parents, for school administrators, and for everyone who is willing to face this growing phenomenon among our nation's teens. It held my attention from beginning to end. I highly recommend it.

Useful Advice for Students and Teachers

This is a wonderful and much needed book that addresses being an atheist student in America today. The author, a long-time blogger, has a refreshingly clear writing style that is accessible to students, parents, teachers and the general public, who are concerned about how non-religious students are ostracized in public schools. I would particularly urge those who feel that organized prayer in schools hurts no one to read the first chapter and then imagine themselves in a place where their personal beliefs are denigrated.

DO NOT PURCHASE THE KINDLE VERSION

I would LOVE to read this book but the Kindle version is illegible and utterly useless. Don't sell a Kindle version if it's going to be too small for the screen with no way to enlarge! Not cool! I want my money back!

While the book itself might be good, the kindle version is the worst. on my iPad Pro (yes, the BIG one) the text is so small it's practically unreadable.
And before someone says "well you idiot, just zoom in", you can't with this book.

So, while the hard book looks great, the kindle version is a complete rip off...

Save your money, but the actually book if you are going too. Me, I wish I could get a refund.

DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION! I have no way to freakin read this book the font is sooo small and I do not have the options to make it bigger. I have a kindle, Macbook Pro, and iphone all of which I cannot read the damn book!

Not what I expected, but not in a bad way

Because I failed to "read the label" when I picked this book up, I had the completely wrong impression that "The War that Killed Achilles" was going to be a historical rendering of the real Trojan War. I didn't know there was enough information for a true history on this topic, so off I went to the library.

It didn't take long, even for me, to realize that this was an interpretation of The Iliad. Appropriately, as fate would have it, I'd had Homer's Iliad and Odyssey sitting on my bookshelf for well over a year. Many good intentions to crack the cover sat next to these works, collecting just as much dust as my handsome 2-volume set complete with stylish cardboard box. I admit it - I had been too intimidated to start them given the length, my experience with Euripides and Sophocles in high school, and the fact I had almost no context for these classics.

Enter Caroline Alexander stage right. Not only does Ms Alexander provide her interpretation of the key themes of The Iliad in simple enough language that I can follow, she provides the context which would make an actual attempt at reading The Iliad possible. Homer's many references to the mindset of 8th Century BC Greeks and contemporary (read: also really old) works would have been completely lost on me, and the accumulation very likely would have left me hating myself for trying.

I'm not well-read in the classics, but I now feel like I have some minimum degree of context to give The Iliad the ol' college try - it doesn't seem quite as intimidating as it did a few days ago. I hope a companion volume entitled "The Voyage that let Odysseus' Dinner Grow Cold" follows.

As of this writing there is one 1-star review which abuses Ms Alexander for wasting the reviewer's time with trivial information about The Iliad. That reviewer, obviously very learned in this subject matter, is not Ms Alexander's intended audience... I am.

A different look at the Trojan War

The Iliad's Trojan War has always been portrayed as a war unlike any other war. A war full of opportunities for glory, bravery, loyalty, a personal fulfillment of destiny... But Caroline Alexander, with deft scholarship, shows that there has been a misreading of the Iliad, purposefully, that in the past could convince and justify young men going to war. Think of the generations of British school boys reading the Greeks (certainly prior to World War I) and being told that there was glory in war. Alexander shows that, instead, the Iliad actually shows the sadness and loss, the irremedial end of things that comes with war. And using the text, she shows that the main players are aware of it, too.

In addition, this book has a wealth of information in the footnotes. I never knew, for example, that Paris was Alexandu of Wilusa (probably, maybe) in Hittite documents. That piece of trivia will serve me well in many a discussion of the Trojan War :) . But seriously, it IS interesting that she places the war in the context of its era, and discusses many aspects of Greece and eastern coast of Turkey during that period.

I bought this book as an impulse buy at an airport bookstore, and might never have found it otherwise. That is a shame because it is a truly interesting and well written book that will please both the scholar and the general reader like myself.

Alexander's Main Theory Dies Too

Author Alexander's main points in this book seem to be that war is cruel, vicious and senseless, that most of those fighting in one have no personal reason to be fighting, little idea what the war is about and would rather not be risking their lives, that they are often following orders that seem to make no sense, that war leaders may be inept, that many lives (mostly young ones) will be brutally snuffed out and that there are few real winners in war. While certainly worthy of frequent repetition, these are commonplace observations.

In addition, she believes that the "Iliad" is not about the epic glory of war at all but is instead a deeply ironic antiwar work that has been misunderstood for nearly thirty centuries. This is her central idea and is a far from commonplace observation, but it requires evidence and careful argument to establish. Alexander fails to provide these.

Indeed Alexander does not attempt to make a systematic argument in support of her insight. She relies instead on scattered textual passages from the poem and other classical sources to support her point.

Thus, for example, she looks repeatedly to a few passages in which Achilles himself states that he has no personal reason to fight the Trojans and would rather be waging peace at home than war at Troy. Two such passages are referenced more than once: One is Achilles' statement to the effect that he would advise other Greek warriors to sail home and live in peace. The other is a statement from the "Odyssey" in which Achilles' ghost in the underworld tells Odysseus that he (Achilles) would rather be alive as someone's serf than be king of the underworld. Alexander also makes much of what she sees as Achilles' supposed challenge to Agamemnon's status as leader of the Greeks.

To these Alexander adds numerous references to highly realistic, pull-no-punches descriptions of pitiable death in battle, many involving characters who are sympathetic and appealing (Hektor not least among them). She also quotes occasional materials from ancient commentators and poets to the effect that both sides were ruined by the Trojan War.

Such scattered and selective references do not make the case, at least for me, especially since Alexander ignores passages that do not support her. In the first place, the quarrel between Achilles and Agamemnon is never over policy or even generalship. It is about an insult to Achilles' honor. Moreover, not only does Achilles make no effort whatever to seize power, he does not even try to persuade anyone else to support him in his withdrawal of himself and his Myrmidons from battle. Moreover, he gets his mother to obtain Zeus' promise to let the Trojans press the Greeks nearly to destruction so that his return to battle will be desperately needed and will therefore not only repair his honor but enhance it. Achilles is concerned deeply with glory and honor and has no serious intention of abandoning the war. Nothing could stop him from sailing home, but he never attempts to do it.

Nor do the awful battlefield deaths refute this picture. The Iliad is fully aware of the horrors of war and does not prettify death and destruction in the slightest. Yet only Thersites tries to provoke mutiny and no one makes any serious effort to force the leaders to make peace. Thersites is the character who clearly argues that "glory" is an empty term and that death in this war is senseless and without value. Not only does he attract no support, he seems to be universally despised in the Greek army and is beaten senseless for his pains.

Alexander notes that no one dies well or happily in the Iliad. No one is rewarded for their valor and there is no heaven to receive them. But the Greeks had no heaven to receive anyone. The Greek "afterlife" consisted of a fragment of a human being with no memory and very limited awareness of any kind. No ordinary mortals received any rewards in the afterlife. I suspect that most ancient Greeks (a few philosophers aside) would find the very notion of dying well, let alone happily, inconceivable.

It seems to me that the Iliad, while fully sensible of the horrors of war, is equally at ease with the idea that glory, even undying glory, may be found there.

So while Alexander's favored theory must to my mind be regarded as, at best, not proven, I think the book is worth reading as an excellent introduction to the power and richness of the Iliad. Alexander is knowledgeable not only about the Iliad itself but about the works of lesser poets who wrote epic cycles of the Trojan War. She knows the works of Hesiod, of commentators and of other early Greek writers as well. Alexander writes clearly and engagingly and imparts her knowledge without condescending to less informed readers. Overall this is an informative and entertaining book that offers something to anyone even remotely interested in the Homeric epics.

About the Author
Bishop Tudor Bismark resides in Harare, Zimbabwe, which is in the southern region of the continent of Africa. He and his wife, ChiChi, founded Jabula – New Life Ministries International in 1989, initially as an extension of New Life Covenant Church in Harare. Bishop Bismark serves as an Apostolic overseer to over 900 churches in 12 African nations, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South America, the West Indies and the United States of America. In addition to providing full-time financial support to hundreds of pastors and churches, the ministry is responsible for the operation of an extensive Medical Assistance Program, orphanages and other humanitarian outreaches in Southern Africa.

Conflict Resolution - Bishop Tudor Bismark

This is a well overdue book for the body of Christ. No one has attempted to have a honest discussion on this subject. Thank you for giving direction on how to use the gifted ones God sends to help promote the vision in the church. For so long it seems that those, "gifted" God sends to support a vision have not always been treated favorably and are looked upon with suspicion. I pray this book becomes a prerequisite for all churches so the Kingdom of God can focus the attention on the forward move of the assignment. Thank you Bishop Bismark for addressing the Conflict with a Resolution.

Great book for church conflict management.

Great author & book. Conflict resolution is greatly needed in the church as in the world. Unfortunately, Christians struggle applying the Word when it come to forgiveness.

Organizational based

The base of this book is more geared to running God's house in order....there were parts I took the word of God from. But overall I enjoy Bismarks teachings. Good book.
