Gr 2-4 --This Canadian import begins with a discussion of music and its elements, and then scrutinizes the instruments of the orchestra by categories: the strings, the brass, the woodwinds. A great deal of information is offered in a straightforward, well-organized manner. Most terms are clearly presented, though ``vibrate'' is used without real explanation. The bland tone of the prose makes the book mostly a collection of definitions related to the field. Daniel's colorful and somewhat whimsical illustrations, however, give it life. Fantastic intro to orchestra (and musical terms)

This is a superb book/CD set for introducing the orchestra, all its instruments, and musical terms such as tempo, dynamics, etc. We first got it when my son was 3 and he just liked the book, now at age 4 he is captivated by the CD as well. I like that it can grow with a child's understanding/interest for several years. Peter Ustinov's narration in fantastic, a real treat to listen to!
